McDermed, Shoulders net double-figures

Brunswick, ME – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team returned to action Monday afternoon and suffered a 64-44 at #6/6 Bowdoin to open the Coastal Classic in Brunswick, ME. First Year Lindsey Shoulders (Glen Allen, VA) led the scoring attack with 12 points with Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) chipping in 10 points.
 
Vassar falls to 3-4 overall on the season, while the Polar Bears improve to a perfect 8-0.
 
How It Happened
  • Bowdoin led wire-to-wire on Monday after jumping out to a quick 10-4 advantage following a Maria Belardi triple in the early going.
  • The Polar Bears' lead grew to eight points twice in the opening stanza, including on a Carly Davey three-pointer that sent Bowdoin into the second frame leading 19-11.
  • Vassar converted the first five points of the second stanza, getting a Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) three-pointer to open the quarter and a Shoulder bucket at the 8:03 mark to slice the disadvantage to 19-16.
  • Bowdoin responded with the next seven points to push its lead to double figures on a Jamie Yue free-throw just past the midway point of the period.
  • A Payton Collins three-pointer gave Bowdoin a half-high 29-18 advantage and a Yue triple with 1:03 left before halftime gave the Polar Bears a 34-24 lead through 20 minutes of play.
  • Vassar converted at 33.3-percent overall in the opening half and went 3-for-11 from three-point range.
  • Bowdoin shot 44-percent prior to halftime, including a blistering 6-for-13 from behind the arc.
  • A Davey three-pointer early in the third frame started an 11-2 run for Bowdoin that saw it surge in front 47-29 on a Grace Kinum three-pointer at the 5:41 mark of the quarter.
  • The advantage ballooned to a game-high 22 points, at 53-31, on a Maddie Wilkin bucket with 1:50 left in the third quarter.
  • Vassar would get as close as 16 points the rest of the way, on a Shoulders bucket to close out the period that made the score 53-37.
  • The Polar Bears would not allow Vassar closer than 18 points throughout the final frame and matched its game-high lead on a Kinum lay-in with just under four minutes left to play.
  • The Brewers were held to 20.8-percent shooting after halftime and finished the second half 1-for-9 from three-point range.
  • Bowdoin shot 43.3-percent over the final 20 minutes and connected on three more triples in the second half.
 
For The Brewers
  • Shoulders scored in double-figures for the fourth straight game after netting 12 points on 5-for-13 shooting. Shoulders added three rebounds and a steal for the Brewers.
  • McDermed reached 10 points on 3-for-6 shooting and led the Brewers with seven rebounds to go along with an assist, a block and a pair of steals.
  • Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) chipped in seven points off the bench on the strength of a 5-for-6 effort from the free-throw line.
  • Elodie Ware (Columbus, OH) finished the day with six points and three rebounds for Vassar.
 
For The Polar Bears
  • Kinum led all scorers with 18 points, going 7-for-10 from the field while adding a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
  • Davey and Belardi each scored eight points with Belardi hauling in seven rebounds.
  • Collins came off the bench to score nine points, going 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
  • Yue finished a productive day with six points, three rebounds, three assists and a trio of steals.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 27.5-percent for the game and went 4-for-20 from behind the arc.
  • Bowdoin converted at a 43.6-percent clip and knocked down nine three-pointers.
  • Vassar outscored Bowdoin 12-7 from the free-throw line.
  • Bowdoin outscored Vassar 24-14 in the paint.
  • The Brewers converted 10 offensive rebounds into a 13-8 edge in second chance scoring.
  • Vassar forced 16 Bowdoin turnovers and finished with a 23-20 advantage in points off of miscues.

  • Vassar closes out 2025 on Tuesday when it takes on Tufts in the second game of the Coastal Classic for both teams.
