Brewers Dealt Road Loss At Mount Saint Mary

McDermed, Regan score in double-figures

Newburgh, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team returned to action Saturday afternoon and was edged 72-68 on the road at local rival Mount Saint Mary. Senior Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) led the Vassar scoring attack with a season-high 21 points.
 
Saturday's loss drops Vassar to 1-2 overall on the season, while Mount Saint Mary improves to 4-2 through its first six contests of the season.
 
How It Happened
  • Tightly contested throughout, the game was played inside a nine-point window the entire 40 minutes.
  • The Knights never trailed in the first quarter and jumped out to an early 8-4 lead on a pair of Reese Mayer free-throws with 6:28 left in the opening frame.
  • After two Brianna Guglielmo free-throws gave the Mount an 18-14 lead, Vassar closed the quarter on a 5-2 spurt keyed by a Sam Lederman (East Brunswick, NJ) triple and a pair of McDermed free-throws to pull to within 16-15 through 10 minutes of play.
  • Vassar grabbed its first lead of the game when a Lindsey Shoulders (Glen Allen, VA) bucket that pushed the Brewers in front 17-16.
  • After quickly falling behind 19-17 on an Angelina Donato three-pointer, Vassar put together a 8-0 stretch, highlighted by a two buckets from McDermed, to grab its largest lead of the game at 25-19.
  • The Brewers maintained the lead until the 3:19 mark of the second period when a Guglielmo conversion pushed the Knights back in front 28-27.
  • Shoulders would give Vassar back a 31-30 lead with 1:41 left before halftime, but Mount Saint Mary scored the final four points of the half to carry a 34-31 lead into the intermission.
  • Vassar shot 41.9-percent over the opening 20 minutes and went 3-for-12 from three-point range.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 37.9-percent with just one three-pointer, but outscored Vassar 11-2 from the free-throw line.
  • Mount Saint Mary scored the first five points of the second half, including another Donato three-pointer, that gave the Knights a 39-31 lead.
  • Vassar would whittle its disadvantage down to three points on a Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) free-throw, but Mount Saint Mary got a pair of triples from Donato in the closing minute of the third quarter to carry a 54-47 lead into the final stanza.
  • Two Guglielmo free-throws to open the fourth quarter scoring gave the Mount its largest lead of the game at 56-47.
  • Vassar used a 9-2 run to slice its disadvantage to 58-56 on a Regan bucket with 7:54 left to play, but would be unable to pull even in the contest.
  • Vassar would get as close as two points again on a McDermed three-pointer with 14 seconds left, but two more free-throws from Guglielmo closed out the final four-point decision for the Knights.
  • Vassar converted at just under 43-percent after halftime and knocked down five three-pointers.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 45.8-percent after the break and outscored Vassar from the line 13-2.
 
For The Brewers
  • McDermed reached 20 points in a game for the first time this season after going 8-for-14 from the field, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc. McDermed rounded out the day with five rebounds, three assists and a block.
  • Regan scored in double-figures for the third straight game to open the season, netting 14 points on 6-for-17 shooting. Regan hauled in eight rebounds, handed out three assists and swiped a team-high three steals.
  • Shoulders, who was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week on Monday, led the Brewers with nine rebounds and chipped in nine points.
  • Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) totaled nine points and six rebounds for the Brewers.
  • Lederman finished 3-for5 from the floor with two triples on the way to eight points.
 
For The Knights
  • Guglielmo led all scorers with 22 points after going 6-for-10 from the floor and a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.
  • Donato went 4-for-5 from three-point range on the way to 16 points while adding three assists and three steals.
  • Margaret Trinkaus led all players with five assists and totaled 13 points and five rebounds.
  • Mayer finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
  • Sara Cashin came off the bench to supply nine points and nine boards.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot a season-best 42.4-percent from the floor and went 8-for-28 from three-point range.
  • Mount Saint Mary converted at 41.5-percent and hit on four three-pointers.
  • The Knights outscored Vassar from the free-throw line 24-4.
  • Mount Saint Mary held a 24-12 advantage in points off of turnovers.
  • Second chance points went to Vassar by a 12-8 margin.
  • Points in the paint were even at 30-30.
