Brewers Topped At #14/13 Trinity (CT)

McDermed, Shoulders score in double-figures

Hartford, CT – The Vassar College Women's Basketball suffered a tight 68-60 road loss at #14/13 Trinity (CT) Wednesday night. Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) and Lindsey Shoulders (Glen Allen, VA) each scored in double-figures with McDermed totaling a team-high 18 points.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Vassar to 1-3 overall on the season, while the Bantams improve to 6-1 through their first seven contests.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar raced out to an 8-1 lead to open the contest on the strength of six points from First Year Elodie Ware (Columbus, OH).
  • The Brewers spread its lead to 18-7 on a Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) layup with 3:29 left in the first frame.
  • Vassar never relinquished the lead in the first period, but the Bantams closed the period with a 9-4 spurt to cut their disadvantage to 22-16 through 10 minutes.
  • Trinity cuts the deficit to 22-19 on a Maya Carnes bucket early in the second frame.
  • Vassar responded with a 6-0 run, with all the scoring done by Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME), to regain a 28-19 lead with 7:24 left before halftime.
  • Trinity would get back to within four points in the final minute of the first half, but a Regan three-pointer at the horn sent Vassar into the intermission with a 35-28 lead.
  • Vassar shot 43.3-percent from the floor over the opening 20 minutes, but went just 1-for-7 from behind the arc.
  • Trinity converted at 32.4-percent in the first half and went 1-for-9 from bonus distance.
  • A Regan three-pointer just over two minutes into the second half pushed the Brewers' advantage back to double-figures at 42-32.
  • The Bantams would pull to within a single point on four occasions before finally taking their first lead, 51-49, on a Lucy Dorion triple with 1:43 left in the third period.
  • An Avery Marzo bucket with 53 seconds left in the quarter pushed Trinity in front 53-49 before a pair of McDermed free-throws cut the Vassar disadvantage to just two points with 10 minutes left to play.
  • Trinity opened the final stanza on a 10-2 run, capped by a Carnes three-pointer, to surge in front 63-53.
  • A Marzo conversion with 4:17 left to play gave the Bantams a game-high 65-53 lead.
  • Following the Marzo bucket, Vassar would not be able to pull closer than the final eight-point decision.
  • Vassar cooled to 32.1-percent shooting after halftime and went 2-for-7 from behind the arc.
  • Trinity shot 41.5-percent in the second half, including better than 52-percent in the third quarter, and knocked down a trio of triples.
 
For The Brewers
  • McDermed led all players with 18 points and rounded out a double-double effort with a team-high 10 rebounds. McDermed finished off a big night with five assists, three blocked shots and a steal.
  • Shoulders chipped in 10 points and five rebounds and added a pair of steals.
  • Regan scored eight points and handed out four assists.
  • Ippolito totaled eight points.
  • Ware scored seven points and collected four rebounds.
 
For The Bantams
  • Marzo led five Trinity players in double-figures with 14 points off the bench to go along with six rebounds and four steals.
  • Carnes and Kiki Fossbender each scored 12 points with Carnes adding three thefts.
  • Marlo Simms collected a game-high 14 rebounds and chipped in 10 points.
  • Melissa Whitmore and Samantha Slofkiss each secured 12 boards.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the night shooting 37.9-percent and went 3-for-14 from three-point range.
  • Trinity converted at 37.2-percent and finished 4-for-17 from behind the arc.
  • Vassar outscored Trinity 13-6 from the free-throw line.
  • Trinity held the advantage in paint points 38-30, second chance scoring 16-13 and points off of turnovers 17-14.
