Men's Basketball Routs Mount Saint Mary to Improve to 4-0

Vassar nets five players with double-digit points to carry the Brewers to a dominant victory

New Paltz, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball team used five double-digit scorers, including a career-high 15 points from sophomore Will Gregory, to coast to a 105-58 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in the second day of the Hudson Valley Classic.

The 105 points scored is the fourth-highest in Vassar program history as the Brewers record improves to 4-0 to open the season while the Knights drop to 2-2 overall.

First Half
  • Vassar raced out to a 14-0 lead to begin the game behind two three-pointers from junior Shea Fitzgerald along with four points from senior Nathan Denham and a two points apiece from junior Sebastian Medina and sophomore Parker Neuenhaus.
  • The lead ballooned to 33-7 at the 10:05 mark following four points from first year Gyasi Zinn and triples from Gregory and junior Kale Elmhorst.
  • An 8-0 run for the Knights, led by five points from JP Egan, cut the VC lead down to 39-22 with 4:26 remaining in the first half.
  • Vassar closed the first half with three straight three-pointers from junior Eric Zhang, Fitzgerald and Gregory to take a 54-29 lead into the halftime intermission.
  • VC concluded the opening 20 minutes shooting 52.5-percent overall, including 8-for-17 from three-point territory, and converted on 4-of-5 from the free throw line,
  • The Mount ended the first half shooting 37.9-percent from the field while going 3-for-8 from three-point distance and shot 4-for-8 from the free throw stripe.
Second Half
  • Two buckets apiece from Neuenhaus and Denham expanded the Vassar lead coming out of the half to 62-31.
  • The Knights trimmed the advantage to 70-44 on two free throws from Liam Lynch with 12:12 remaining in the second half.
  • Five straight points from Gregory along with a lay-in from Elmhorst pushed the Brewers lead to 77-47 with 10:29 left.
  • Following a three-pointer from Matthew Walsh to put the Knights within 81-54 with 7:38 remaining, Vassar reeled off a 14-0 run behind three points each from Elmhorst and senior Sacha Greenberg along with a layup from first year Kas Mirza to expand the Vassar lead to 95-54 at the 4:56 mark.
  • Two triples from Mirza and two free throws from first year Jack Moineau in the final 1:44 gave VC the final 105-58 victory.
  • VC finished the second half shooting an even 50-percent from the field while going 4-for-13 from three and 5-for-9 from the free throw line.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 31.3-percent from the field in the second half, including 3-for-8 from three-point distance, and 6-for-8 from the free throw line.
For The Brewers
  • Neuenhaus recorded his first double-double in a Vassar uniform with 14 points and 11 rebounds along with adding three assists.
  • Denham garnered 16 points, three boards and two blocks while Gregory registered 15 points, four assists, four boards and two steals.
  • Fitzgerald posted 12 points, eight assists and six rebounds along with Mirza tallying 10 points and three rebounds,
  • Junior Avery Lee chipped in eight points and four assists while Elmhorst scored eight points.
  • Junior Kreekor Karageuzian finished with five assists, four steals and four rebounds.
For The Knights
  • Egan finished with a team-high 12 points and five rebounds while Walsh tallied 10 points and four assists.
  • Rob Geremino posted seven points, two blocks and two steals along with Matt Monaco chipping in nine points off the bench.
  • Lynch added eight points off the bench.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the contest shooting 51.2-percent from the field, including 12-for-30 from three, and 9-for-14 from free throw line.
  • MSMC closed the game shooting 34.4-percent overall while going 6-for-16 from three-point distance and 10-for-16 from the free throw line,
  • The Brewers held a 20-7 advantage in points off turnovers along with 60-28 in points in the paint.
  • VC also held a 23-2 edge in fastbreak points and 34-13 in second chance points.

  • Vassar is off until Tuesday, December 2 when the Brewers travel to Williams for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
