Men's Basketball Winning Streak Stopped at Four Against #RV Williams

Brewers will begin conference play against Ithaca at home on Friday

Williamstown, MA - The #RV Vassar College Men's Basketball team saw its season-opening four game winning streak stopped on Wednesday evening as the Brewers fell 79-69 on the road against #RV Williams. Vassar's record moves to 4-1 overall while the Ephs improve to 6-1 on the season.

First Half
  • Williams opened the game with a 9-2 lead in the first two and a half minutes behind five points from Hudson Hanson and four points from Onyeraluobu Chibuogwu.
  • Vassar went on a 10-4 run over the next three minutes to get within one at 13-12 following three points each from junior Shea Fitzgerald and senior Nathan Denham.
  • The Brewers tied the game at 24 all on a layup from sophomore Parker Neuenhaus at the 8:42 mark and a Denham jumper with 5:29 remaining in the first half put the score at 28 apiece.
  • Over the next four minutes of action, the Ephs went on a 17-5 run, led by eight points from Jackson Rein, to put Williams ahead 45-33.
  • Sammy Cooley's three-point play with seven seconds left in the half gave the Ephs a 49-36 lead at the half.
  • Vassar closed the opening 20 minutes shooting 42.9-percent from the field, including 3-for-10 from three-point range, and converted 3-of-5 from the free throw line.
  • Williams shot a blistering 55.9-percent overall in the first half while knocking down 8-of-18 from three-point distance and going 3-for-5 from the free throw line.
Second Half
  • Vassar cut the lead to single digits at 49-41 coming out of the break following a three-point play from Fitzgerald and a lay-in from Neuenhaus.
  • Following a layup from Rein to put the Ephs ahead 51-41, VC rattled off 10 straight points behind five points from junior Sebastian Medina and triples from Lee and Fitzgerald to tie the game at 52 at the 14:09 mark.
  • Six consecutive free throws from Hanson pushed Williams back in front by eight at 65-57 with 10:35 to go in the second half.
  • Vassar got back within eight at the 5:30 mark after two free throws from Lee but the Ephs expanded the lead to 11 on a three-point play from Justin Belcher.
  • The Brewers could only get within eight points in the final five minutes on a three-pointer from Lee with 2:38 remaining.
  • VC ended the second half shooting 36.4-percent from the field while going 4-for-13 from three-point territory and 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
  • Williams cooled to 40-percent overall in the second half while converting just 1-for-11 from three but went 13-for-16 from the free throw stripe.
For The Brewers
  • Lee tallied a team-high 18 points on 6-for-12 from the field while adding a team-high six assists.
  • Fitzgerald recorded 13 points, five boards, three assists and three steals along with Medina registering 12 points, two rebounds and two assists.
  • Neuenhaus chipped in eight points and two blocks while Denham posted seven points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists.
For The Ephs
  • Hansen garnered a game-high 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks while Rein posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Aidan Yates recorded 10 points, four rebounds and two assists along with Belcher added 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two blocks off the bench.
  • Chibuogwu chipped in six points and three assits while Matt Devine tallied eight points off the bench and Isiaha Dickens posted five points and four assists off the bench.
Game Statistics
  • VC closed the contest shooting 39.7-percent overall while going 7-for-23 from three and 9-for-11 from the free throw line.
  • Williams shot an even 50-percent from the field, including 9-for-29 from three-point range, and connected on 16-for-21 from the free throw line.
  • Vassar held a 14-6 edge in points off turnovers and a slim 38-36 advantage in points in the paint.
  • Williams had a slight 10-9 advantage in second chance points while the Ephs held a 25-11 edge in bench points.
