Field Hockey Blanks RPI to Clinch Top Seed in Liberty League Championship

Hoffman's goal in the first quarter sends Vassar to 1-0 victory over the Engineers

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team clinched the top seed in the 2025 Liberty League Championship for the first time since 2018 on Wednesday night with a 1-0 victory over RPI as junior Karina Hoffman's scored the lone goal in the first quarter and junior Grace Wiley recorded her fourth shutout in net for the Brewers.

Vassar's record improves to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in Liberty League play as the Brewers hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Union to secure the top seed in the conference championship. RPI's record drops to 8-8 on the season and 2-5 in conference action.

How It Happened
  • Both defenses stood strong in the opening nine minutes of the first quarter as RPI goalie Tess Garchinsky made three stops in the first two minutes along with Wiley registering a save four minutes into the period and senior Gianna Hoover made her fourth defensive save of the season to keep the game scoreless.
  • Hoffman's goal came with five and a half minutes remaining in the opening quarter on a high shot over the goalie off a pass from first year Audrey Izzo to put the Brewers in front for good.
  • Ella Pasquarelli had a strong chance right before the end of the first half but Wiley turned the shot aside to keep VC ahead at the break.
  • Following a scoreless third period, Wiley made an early stop on Pasquarelli again to keep the shutout intact for the Brewers.
  • Vassar held the Engineers without a shot on target over the final 10 minutes to clinch the top seed in the conference championship for the first time since 2018.
For The Brewers
  • Hoffman's goal was her seventh of the season and she now ranks in solo second in goals for the Brewers.
  • Izzo's assist was her second of the campaign along with sophomore Zoe Robinson and Izzo each recording two shots.
  • Hoover's defensive save was her fourth this season and 14 for her career, which ranks her tied for fourth all-time in Vassar history.
  • Wiley scores her 10th victory in goal for Vassar as she made four saves in the shutout.
For The Engineers
  • Pasquarelli registered three shots, including two on goal, while Katie Galgay fired two shots, including one on target.
  • Garchinsky made seven stops in the loss in goal.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the contest with a 13-8 advantage in shots, including 8-5 in shots on goal.
  • RPI held a slim edge in penalty corners at 3-2.
