Women's Volleyball Pulls Off Five-Set Comeback Victory Over St. Lawrence

Brewers move into a tie for fifth place in the Liberty League standings

Canton, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball went the distance for the third straight match on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers pulled off a 25-23, 22-25, 17-25, 25-19, 15-12 victory over St. Lawrence on the road in conference action. The Brewers record improves to 14-7 overall and 3-4 in Liberty League play while the Saints drop to 13-10 on the season and 2-6 in conferencea action. 

First Set
  • Following a back-and-forth opening to the first set, Vassar took a 9-7 lead on kills from junior Maura McAusland and senior Rebecca Gutierrez along with a block from first year Elena Feuer and McAusland.
  • An ace from McAusland increased the advantage to 13-10 before SLU battled back to even the set at 13 on a kill from Bridget Gammons.
  • SLU scored six of the next seven points to earn a 20-16 lead on kills from Adeline Riesenberger, Vanessa Latam and Araiza Acum-Santos.
  • Three consecutive winners from McAusland drew the Brewers within one at 20-19 before the Saints pushed the lead back to 22-19 on a Riesenberger kill.
  • VC collected five straight points on two kills from sophomore Erin Lovett along with a kill and an ace from McAusland to gain a 24-22 lead.
  • A Gammons winner put the Saints within a point until McAusland's kill clinched the first set victory for the Brewers.
Second Set
  • VC raced out to a 5-1 lead on an ace from McAusland and kills from Feuer and Lovett.
  • First year Caroline Brabeck's ace expanded the lead to 12-7 until SLU cut the lead to 12-9 on a kill from Sofia Velasquez.
  • The Brewers increased the lead to 18-11 following an ace from first year Summer Stern.
  • SLU answered to cut the deficit to 19-18, led by three kills from Latam and a kill each from Velasquez, Berit Brecke and Kalina Natcheva.
  • Following a solo block from Brabeck, the Saints scored seven of the final nine points of the set and took the set win on a kill from Brecke.
Third Set
  • Lovett's winner pushed Vassar ahead 6-4 early before SLU took a 9-7 lead after a solo block from Latam and a Brecke kill.
  • A block and a kill from McAusland, a solo block from senior Rebecca Gutierrez and a winner from sophomore Eleanor Gegen pushed the Brewers back in front 13-12.
  • The Saints went on a five-point run to pull ahead 21-15 on two kills from Brecke and one winner each from Acum-Santos and Latam.
  • SLU took the third set victory on a kill from Natcheva.
Fourth Set
  • The Brewers started the fourth set with a 6-3 advantage on two aces from Brabeck, two kills from Lovett and one winner from junior Holland Kaplan.
  • St. Lawrence tied the set at seven on a kill from Acum-Santos and a block from Natcheva and Latam.
  • Vassar pushed back ahead 13-9 on three winners from McAusland.
  • Back-to-back aces from Stern increased the lead to 19-13 before SLU got within 21-18 on two straight winners from Riesenberger.
  • Vassar scored four of the final five points to take the fourth set following a kill apiece from Kaplan and first year Brenna Olson.
Fifth Set
  • Vassar scored a 5-1 lead to begin the deciding set on two kills and a solo block from Lovett along with a McAusland winner.
  • Acum-Santos' kill cut the deficit to 6-5 until a Lovett kill pushed the advantage to 9-5.
  • VC extended the lead to 13-8 on consecutive kills from McAusland before the Saints cut the lead to 13-12 on two blocks from Gammons and Latam along with an ace from Lily Snide and a Natcheva kill.
  • The Brewers capitalized on a SLU service error and a kill from Lovett clinched the five-set victory.
For The Brewers
  • McAusland registered a match-high 17 kills, three aces, three blocks and 17 digs while Kaplan tallied 15 kills and 18 digs.
  • Lovett garnered 14 kills (.464) along with Gutierrez chipping in four kills and two blocks.
  • Brabeck handed out a match-high 44 assists, four aces and nine digs while Stern added three aces and nine digs.
  • Senior Ellie Kogan lifted 15 digs for the Brewers.
For The Saints
  • Acum-Santos garnered a team-high 15 winners and 10 digs along with Latam recording 38 assists, 13 kills, two aces, three blocks and 17 digs.
  • Gammons added 11 kills, two blocks and four digs while Brecke registered eight kills and two blocks.
  • Cassady Smith lifted a match-high 23 digs and 10 assists along with Maggie Layman recording three aces and nine digs.
Up Next
  • Vassar will return home to host a tri-match with RIT and King's College (PA) on Saturday, November 1 at 12:00 p.m.
  • St. Lawrence will travel to SUNY Cobleskill on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.
