Big Second Half Sends Vassar Past Skidmore

Brewers tally three times after halftime

Poughkeepsie, NY – Sophomore Arden Tobolski (Chapel Hill, NC) scored two second half goals and classmate Gavin Johnson (Cincinnati, OH) potted his first career marker as the Vassar College Men's Soccer team scored a key 3-0 Liberty League victory over Skidmore Saturday afternoon.
 
At 8-4-3 overall and 4-1-2 in Liberty League play, Vassar moves a point ahead of Union for third-place in the conference standings and just two points behind Skidmore with six points left available for the Brewers. The win also closes an unbeaten regular season at home for Vassar who posted a 7-0-1 at Gordon Field.
 
How It Happened
  • The two sides went without a goal over the opening 45 minutes with Vassar outshooting Skidmore 6-2 heading into halftime.
  • Vassar also controlled corner kicks in the first half with a 3-1 advantage.
  • Senior Patrick Gale (San Antonio, TX) held Skidmore off the board with one save.
  • Skidmore netminder, William Devall, turned aside three Vassar attempts prior to halftime.
  • Vassar finally broke through in the 60th minute when Diego Pastor-Valverde (Durham, NC) played a ball from the top of the box to the right wing where Tobolski deposited the eventual game winner at 59:35.
  • The lead doubled in the 68th minute when Tobolski struck again, this time off a pass from Jared Fiske (Livingston, NJ) at 67:46.
  • The Brewers put the game away in the 89th minute when Johnson buried his first career goal.
  • Mauricio Mejia (Miami, FL) carried the ball into the box and centered a pass to Johnson who tucked a shot under the bar at 88:01 to close out the scoring in the game.
  • Vassar held a 10-6 advantage in shots in the second half.
  • Skidmore took two of the three second half corner kicks.
  • Gale made two saves after halftime to preserve the shutout.
  • Devall saved five shots in the second half for the Thoroughbreds.
 
For The Brewers
  • Tobolski moved into a tie for the team lead in goals with 11 following Saturday's performance and has posted his second straight 30-point season with a team-high 33 to date. Tobolski, who moves to seventh all-time at Vassar in points as a sophomore, also picked up his team leading fourth game winning goal of the season.
  • Johnson is the ninth different Brewer to score a goal in 2025 and pushes his season point total to four.
  • Fiske assisted on his sixth goal of the season and is second on the team in points with 28.
  • Mejia recorded his third assist of the season on the Johnson tally.
  • Pastor-Valverde also recorded his third helper of the campaign and stands with seven points on the season.
  • Gale recorded his first career shutout in the win with a trio of saves for the Brewers.
 
For The Thoroughbreds
  • Devall suffered the loss in goal with eight saves for Skidmore.
  • Colin Goodhines led the Thoroughbreds with four shots on the day.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar doubled up Skidmore in overall shots 16-8 and held a commanding 11-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Brewers by a 4-3 count.

  • Vassar heads to RPI on Wednesday.
