Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team overwhelmed St. Lawrence on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers earned a 5-1 victory at home behind two goals from junior
Karina Hoffman. Prior to the game, Vassar celebrated its four seniors:
Margo Gramiak,
Sofia Beseth,
Gianna Hoover and
Sydney Kovel.
Vassar now sits at 9-6 overall and 4-2 in conference action, which is now a three-way tie for first place in the Liberty League with Rochester and Union. St. Lawrence falls to 4-9 on the season and 1-6 in league play.
How It Happened
- Following a scoreless opening quarter, Vassar opened the scoring five minutes into the second period as sophomore Zoe Robinson scored her 12th goal of the season off a rebound of a shot on target from Hoffman.
- About three and a half minutes later, Hoffman doubled the Brewers lead with a turnaround shot for her fifth goal of the campaign.
- The Brewers earned a corner with two and a minutes left in the half as first year Sophia Jammar buried her sixth goal of the season off an insert from Beseth to give Vassar a 3-0 lead at the halftime break.
- Vassar bolstered its lead to 4-0 in the fourth quarter as Hoffman scored her second goal of the game and sixth of the season with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation.
- Just under a minute later, sophomore Mackenzie Allen tallied her fourth goal of the season on a pass from Beseth to push Vassar in front 5-0.
- St. Lawrence scored with just about a minute remaining regulation on a tally from Sydney LeClair off a feed from Maja Helmer.
For The Brewers
- Hoffman's two goals on the day now puts her in second on the team in goals with six and points with 16.
- Robinson added to her team-leading mark in goals with 12 and points with 25 while Beseth's two assists now put her in a tie for first in assists with four and tied for second in points with 16.
- Allen recorded her fourth goal of the campaign and Jammar now sits in a tie for second on the team in goals with six.
- Senior Grace Wiley earned her ninth victory in goal for the Brewers and made two saves on the day.
For The Saints
- LeClair recorded the lone goal for St. Lawrence while Helmer registered the lone assist.
- Lily Gubbins tallied three shots on the day, including two on target.
- Elizabeth Walsh took the loss in net as she made 11 saves for the Saints.
Game Statistics
- Vassar finished the game outshooting St. Lawrence 31-9, including 16-3 in shots on goal.
- The Brewers also held a 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.
