Saratoga Springs, NY - For the second straight match, the Vassar College Women's Volleyball team went all five sets in a Liberty League matchup as the Brewers ultimately fell 25-17, 16-25, 25-20, 15-25, 9-15 on the road against Skidmore on Friday evening. Vassar's record drops to 13-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play while the Thoroughbreds improve to 11-9 on the season and 3-3 in Liberty League action.
First Set
- Vassar opened the match with a 4-1 advantage following a kill from junior Maura McAusland and an ace from first year Caroline Brabeck.
- Back-to-back aces from Katy O'Connell evened the set at four before the lead grew back to 9-5 on a winner from junior Holland Kaplan.
- Natalie Pederson's kill trimmed the lead down to 11-9 until VC used kills from Kaplan and sophomore Erin Lovett along with a block from first year Elena Feuer and Kaplan to push the lead to 16-10.
- Two kills from Kaplan and one winner apiece from McAusland and senior Rebecca Gutierrez expanded the Brewers lead to 22-13.
- Skidmore got within 23-16 on an ace from Catriona Hoelperl but a kill from Lovett took the opening set 25-17 for Vassar.
Second Set
- Skidmore raced out to a 7-2 lead in the second set behind two Hoelperl aces and kills from Maya Stolarz, Chloe Heitman and Marlowe McIntyre.
- An ace from junior T Petro and a kill from Kaplan reduced the lead to 8-5 until a Heitman kill and an ace from Isobel Streeper put the Thorougbreds ahead 10-5.
- The Thoroughbreds lead expanded to 17-9 on a block from O'Connell and Stolarz until VC scored three straight on kills from Lovett and Kaplan, leading to a Skidmore timeout at 17-12.
- Two winners from Heitman, an ace from O'Connell and a kill from Stolarz extended the Thoroughbreds lead to 23-14.
- McAusland's kill brought the Brewers back within eight at 24-16 before a Hoelperl winner evened the match at one set all.
Third Set
- VC scored a 5-1 lead to begin the third stanza as Lovett buried two winners along with an ace from Brabeck.
- Two straight winners from Stolarz cut the deficit to 6-4 before Vassar pushed its lead to 13-7 after aces from Kaplan and Petro and a kill each from McAusland and Lovett.
- Athena Braverman's ace reduced the Brewers lead to 16-12 until VC expanded the advantage to 21-14 following a block from Feuer and Lovett.
- The Thoroughbreds battled back with blocks from Jazlin Chen, Hoelperl and Stolarz to get back within 21-17.
- After a Pederson kill put Skidmore within 23-20, Vassar used a kill from Gutierrez and a Skidmore error to take the 25-20 set victory.
Fourth Set
- The set opened even at four until the Thoroughbreds capitalized on three aces and one kill from O'Connell to go ahead 11-5.
- The lead expanded to 17-6 behind an ace from Streeper and a winner from McIntyre.
- Vassar collected four consecutive points to get back within 17-10 on two kills from Gutierrez and McAusland.
- Skidmore used two kills and a block from Chen along with a winner from Pedersen to score a 21-10 advantage.
- McAusland tallied an ace and a kill to bring Vassar back within 24-15 but the Thoroughbreds extended the match to the fifth set on a block from Stolarz and O'Connell.
Fifth Set
- VC went ahead 4-2 in the final set on a kill and an ace from McAusland, a winner from Lovett and a block from Lovett and Feuer.
- Skidmore took the lead at 8-5 following three kills from Chen and a kill each from Madison Manning and Hoelperl.
- The Brewers regained the advantage at 9-8 following two kills from Kaplan, a winner from sophomore Eleanor Gegen and an ace from first year Summer Stern.
- The Thoroughbreds scored the final seven points behind four winners from Chen, two kills from Pederson and an ace from Manning.
For The Brewers
- McAusland recorded a team-high 13 kills, two aces and five digs while Kaplan registered 12 winners, six digs, an ace and a block.
- Lovett added 11 kills and two blocks along with Gutierrez tallying six kills.
- Feuer finished with two winners and four blocks while Brabeck recorded a team-high 31 assists, 11 digs and three aces.
- Senior Ellie Kogan lifted a match-high 18 digs and Petro landed three aces.
For The Thoroughbreds
- Pedersen tallied a match-high 17 winners while Chen recorded 13 kills and three blocks.
- Stolarz chipped in nine kills and six blocks along with Heitman adding eight kills.
- Hoelperl finished with a match-high 42 assists, five aces and 11 digs.
- Marlowe lifted a team-high 17 digs, Streeper added 12 digs and three aces and O'Connell finished with six aces, six blocks and three digs.
