Field Hockey Toppled at Home Against William Smith

Allen scores third goal of the season

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team fell for just the second time at home this season as the Brewers dropped a 2-1 conference matchup against William Smith at Weinberg Field on Sunday. Vassar's record moves to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in Liberty League play while the Herons improve to 9-7 on the season and 3-2 in conference action.

How It Happened
  • William Smith got on the board quickly in the first quarter as Lily Gutch scored her seventh goal of the season off a scramble in front of the cage to make it 1-0 in the first two minutes.
  • VC countered with a goal of its own just under six minutes into the period on the third goal of the season from sophomore Mackenzie Allen off an insert on a corner from first year Sierra Chow.
  • The Herons had a flurry of chances off a corner halfway through the quarter but junior Grace Wiley turned away three shots and senior Gianna Hoover registered her third defensive save of the season to keep the game even at one.
  • Following a second period that saw just two combined shots, William Smith scored the deciding goal off a corner halfway through the third quarter on Gutch's second goal of the game off an assist from Caroline Kogut.
  • Vassar got one shot on target in the last quarter on a shot from senior Sofia Beseth but it was turned away by Olivia Terranova.
For The Brewers
  • Allen tallied her third goal of the season while Chow added her third assist of the season, which ranks tied for second on the team.
  • Sophomore Zoe Robinson recorded two shots along with junior Karina Hoffman and Beseth registering shots on target.
  • Hoover made her third defensive save of the season and Wiley made four saves in net.
For The Herons
  • Gutch scored both goals of the contest for the Herons while Kogut recorded the lone assist.
  • Mia Batchelder fired three shots on goal along with Abby Jones recording two shots on target.
  • Terranova earned the win in goal and made four saves.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the game outshooting William Smith 13-9 but the Herons held the advantage on goal at 7-5.
  • The Brewers posted a 10-5 edge in penalty corners.
