Maura McAusland buried a career-high 27 kills and classmate
Francesca Medrano handed out a career-high 50 assists but the Vassar College Women's Volleyball team was outlasted in a wild five-set match, 23-25, 25-22, 29-27, 18-25, 13-15, against Union in conference action on Saturday at Kenyon Hall. The Brewers record moves to 13-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play while the Garnet Chargers improve to 14-8 on the season and 3-1 in Liberty League action.
First Set
- Union scored a 9-6 lead to begin the match following kills from Shannon McGrath and Maddie McCarron.
- Vassar evened the set at 10 apiece on a block from sophomore Erin Lovett and first year Elena Feuer.
- Back-to-back blocks from senior Rebecca Gutierrez and Lovett put the Brewers ahead 14-12 before a four-point run from Union, capped by an ace from Georgia Pool, put the Garnet Chargers in front 16-14.
- VC answered with five straight points as two kills from junior Holland Kaplan, a winner from McAusland and a block from Medrano and Gutierrez pushed Vassar ahead 19-16.
- The Garnet Chargers drew even at 22 on two blocks from Allie Kronenberg and McCarron and went on to take the set after a McCarron kill and two VC errors.
Second Set
- Vassar scored the first four points of the second stanza on a kill from McAusland an ace from first year Summer Stern.
- Union clawed back to even the set at eight on an ace from Emma Main.
- Three straight kills from McAusland and an ace from Medrano put VC back in front 15-12.
- The Garnet Chargers answered with a run to go in front 20-17 on a block from Georgia Pinciaro and McCarron.
- VC answered with five straight points, led by a kill from Kaplan and an ace from junior T Petro, to regain the lead at 22-20.
- Union tied the set at 22 on a McCarron and Kronenberg block but kills from Gutierrez and Kaplan along with a block from Gutierrez and Medrano evened the match at one set apiece.
Third Set
- Union raced out to a 9-4 lead following an ace from McGrath and kills from Melody Herrin, McCarron and Pinciaro.
- VC answered with six straight points as two blocks from Gutierrez and Lovett led the Brewers back in front 11-9.
- The Brewers expanded the lead to 16-11 on a Kaplan winner before the Garnet Chargers battled back to take a 18-17 lead on a kill from Herrin.
- Vassar regained the lead at 22-21 on another block from Gutierrez and Lovett before the set evened at 24 on a McCarron winner.
- The Brewers finally pulled away for a 29-27 set victory on back-to-back winners from Lovett and McAusland.
Fourth Set
- The Garnet Chargers rattled off a quick 9-3 lead, capped by a McGrath service ace.
- VC got back within 13-9 after kills from McAusland and Lovett along with a block from Lovett and first year Brenna Olson.
- Union's lead grew back to 17-10 on a McGrath kill until VC scored four straight behind two McAusland kills, a Lovett winner and an ace from senior Ellie Kogan to cut the deficit to 17-14.
- Vassar couldn't get any closer in the final points as the Garnet Chargers took the set on an ace from Madisen Bailey.
Fifth Set
- Union raced out to a 4-0 advantage on a kill each from McGrath and McCarron and an ace from Graciela Escobar.
- Vassar cut the lead down to 9-7 behind a block from Olson and a kill from Lovett.
- The Garnet Chargers expanded the lead to 14-10 after two kills from Shea Ringel.
- A kill from McAusland and a block from Gutierrez and Medrano trimmed the Union lead down to 14-13.
- Kronenberg's kill clinched the five-set victory for the Garnet Chargers.
For The Brewers
- McAusland registered a career-high 27 kills, 22 digs and two blocks while Lovett recorded 12 kills, seven blocks and two digs.
- Gutierrez finished with nine kills, a career-high 10 blocks and three digs along with Kaplan tallying 10 kills and 11 digs.
- Medrano garnered a career-best 50 assists, three kills, three aces, three blocks and 21 digs.
- Kogan posted 19 digs and two aces while Petro added 10 digs and two aces.
For The Garnet Chargers
- McGrath led the way with 20 kills, five aces and 12 digs along with McCarron tallying 13 kills and eight blocks (one solo).
- Herrin recorded nine kills and five blocks while Pinciaro registered eight winners and five blocks.
- Kronenberg finished with 46 assists, two kills, seven blocks (one solo) and 13 digs.
- Pool added 18 digs and two aces while Main tallied 13 digs and two aces.
