Women’s Soccer Has Winning Streak Stopped By William Smith

Panarelli scores lone goal for Brewers

Poughkeepsie, NY – The #17 Vassar College Women's Soccer team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end and was dealt its first conference loss of the season Saturday afternoon following a 3-1 loss to William Smith. Junior Gianna Panarelli (Jensen Beach, FL) tallied the lone goal for the Brewers.
 
Saturday's loss drops Vassar to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in Liberty League play, while the Herons improve to 9-2-2 overall and 5-1-0 in conference competition.
 
How It Happened
  • Saturday's contest saw a flurry of action early on with the two sides combing for three goals in a span of 3:18.
  • The Herons opened the scoring at the 16:31 mark when Ruth Hotaling finished off a pass from the left wing from Nell Dwyer for the early one-goal advantage.
  • The lead was short lived as the Brewers came back just 47 seconds later with the equalizer.
  • After Ava Holman (St. Louis, MO) had an attempt blocked she found Panarelli in the box who scored to the far post to make the score 1-1.
  • Just over two-and-a-half minutes later, William Smith scored what proved to be the game winner when Julia Accioly blasted a shot from the top of the box that was deflected into the top corner at 19:49.
  • Leading 2-1 at the break, William Smith finished the opening 45 minutes with an 8-7 advantage in shots.
  • Vassar closed the opening stanza with a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • Both Laura Shea (Swarthmore, PA) for Vassar and Antonia Goerke for William Smith finished with three saves prior to the intermission.
  • William Smith maintained the one-goal edge until the lates stages of the second half when Julia Bragg gave the Herons the final 3-1 lead.
  • Bragg finished off a passing play from Sofia Carney and Grace Metzler at the 76:05 mark of the contest to close out the scoring in the game.
  • Each team finished the second half with four shots.
  • Vassar took seven of the 11 corner kicks awarded after halftime.
  • Shea made a single save in the second half with Goerke turning aside a pair of Vassar attempts.
 
For The Brewers
  • Panarelli scored her fifth goal of the season on Saturday, moving her season point total to 12.
  • Holman picked up her second assist of the season on the Panarelli goal and moved into the team lead in points with 16.
  • Panarelli led the team with five shots in the game, putting three on target.
  • Sonya Franklin (Lancaster, PA) and Lucy Hart (Portland, ME) each closed the day with two shots.
  • Shea rounded out the contest with four saves in goal.
 
For The Herons
  • Hotaling scored her team leading 12th goal of the season in the first half and moved her team leading point total to 25.
  • Accioly finished off her fifth goal of the season and scored the game winning goal in a game for the second time.
  • Bragg tallied for the seventh time this season and is second on the team in points with 14.
  • Dwyer assisted on her second goal of the year.
  • Carney picked up her third assist of the season and Metzler helped on her team leading fourth goal of the campaign.
  • Bragg and Hotaling led the team with three shots apiece in the game.
  • Goerke earned the win in goal with five saves.

  • William Smith outshot Vassar by a slim 12-11 margin, including 7-6 in shots on goal.
