Women's Volleyball Tripped Up at Home Against #RV William Smith

Vassar plays the final match of a three game homestand against Union next Saturday

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team played its second of a three-game  conference homestand on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers fell in four sets 14-25, 16-25, 25-22, 14-25 against #RV William Smith at Kenyon Hall. Vassar's record moves to 13-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play while the Herons improve to 16-2 on the season and 4-0 in Liberty League play.

First Set
  • Vassar held a slim 7-6 edge to start the set behind two kills from senior Rebecca Gutierrez, a winner from junior Holland Kaplan and an ace from junior Francesca Medrano.
  • William Smith scored six straight points behind three aces from Marin Montagne and two winners from Hope Von Dohlen to take a 12-7 lead.
  • Back-to-back kills from sophomore Erin Lovett and junior Maura McAusland trimmed the Herons lead to 14-11.
  • William Smith tallied nine of the next 10 points as a block from Arielle Newsome and Von Dohlen put the Herons ahead 23-12.
  • Von Dohlen's kill gave the Herons the first set victory.
Second Set
  • The Herons raced out to an 8-3 lead behind three kills from Malya Sayre and an ace from Delainy Williams.
  • An ace from junior T Petro and a kill from Gutierrez brought the Brewers back within 9-7.
  • After a winner from Sayre pushed William Smith ahead 15-9, two kills from Lovett and a winner from sophomore Eleanor Gegen cut the deficit to 16-13.
  • A kill from Emily Fulton and an ace from Kali Vanderhoof increased the William Smith advantage to 23-15.
  • McAusland's winner trimmed the lead down to seven but a kill from Fulton and an ace from Montagne clinched the second set for the Herons.
Third Set
  • VC started fast in the third set as a block from first year Elena Feuer and Lovett put the Brewers ahead 8-3.
  • The lead ballooned to 14-6 on a kill and an ace from Kaplan along with a winner each from Gutierrez and Lovett.
  • William Smith cut the lead down to 17-14 on a block from Von Dohlen and Newsome.
  • Vassar grew its lead back to 22-16 on an ace from Petro and a block from Kaplan and Gutierrez.
  • The Herons got back within a point at 23-22 before a kill from McAusland and a William Smith attack error earned the set victory for Vassar.
Fourth Set
  • The Herons gained a 11-3 lead to open set number four behind blocks and kills from Newsome and Sayre.
  • VC cut the deficit down to 14-7 following two kills from McAusland and an ace from Kaplan.
  • Fulton's kill put William Smith ahead by double digits at 17-7 until a quick three-point run, led by a McAusland kill, put the lead back within seven.
  • Vassar battled to cut the lead down to 20-14 on kills from Lovett, Kaplan and McAusland.
  • William Smith scored the final five points of the set behind kills from Sayre and Von Dohlen along with an ace from Williams to win the fourth set.
For The Brewers
  • McAusland tallied a team-high 17 kills (.302) and six digs while Lovett garnered six kills and two blocks.
  • Gutierrez added five winners and a block along with Kaplan recording four kills, two aces and 10 digs.
  • Medrano finished with 29 assists and 12 digs and senior Ellie Kogan lifted a team-high 14 digs.
For The Herons
  • Sayre buried a match-high 21 kills (.333) and added 11 digs while Fulton tallied 12 kills, four aces and 14 digs.
  • Von Dohlen registered 10 kills and three blocks along with Newsome recording five kills and six blocks (two solo).
  • Williams finished an all-around match with 48 assists, two kills, two aces and two digs.
  • Montagne garnered six aces and seven digs while Vanderhoof lifted 12 digs.
Up Next
  • Vassar will close its homestand on Saturday, October 18 against Union at 2:00 p.m.
  • William Smith travels to non-conference foe Nazareth on Wednesday evening.
