#19 Vassar Races Past St. Lawrence, 4-1

Holman, McGrath each record three points

Canton, NY – Senior Riley McGrath (Coronado, CA) and First Year Ava Holman (St. Louis, MO) each finished with a goal and an assist and sophomore Laura Shea (Swarthmore, PA) made eight saves in goal as the #19 Vassar College Women's Soccer team won its fifth straight game with a 4-1 road win at St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon.
 
Saturday's victory improves Vassar's overall standing to 11-2 and its conference mark to an unblemished 5-0. St. Lawrence falls to 6-4-3 overall and 2-2-0 in Liberty League play.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar wasted little time opening the scoring on Saturday, striking twice inside the first 10 minutes of play.
  • McGrath opened the Brewers' account with her sixth goal of the season, finishing off an assist from Holman at 5:34 to give Vassar the early one-goal advantage.
  • Holman picked up what proved to be the game winning goal just under three minutes later with McGrath returning the favor with an assist at 8:12.
  • The Saints cut their deficit in half in the 17th minute when Meredith Donahue found the back of the net off a pass from Chloe Bourque.
  • Leading 2-1 at the intermission, Vassar was outshot in the first half 11-9, but took five of the six corner kicks awarded in the opening frame.
  • Shea turned aside four first half shots for the Brewers.
  • Vassar quickly spread its lead back to two goals coming out of halftime, with Gianna Panarelli (Jensen Beach, FL) tallying just 3:53 into the second half.
  • The final goal of the game came in the 65th minute after First Year Sonya Franklin (Lancaster, PA) buried a feed from classmate Elena Valle (Rocky Hill, CT) at 64:49.
  • Vassar managed just four shots after halftime, scoring on half of them, with St. Lawrence holding a 9-4 edge in attempts after the break.
  • Second half corner kicks went to the Saints by a 3-1 margin.
  • Shea turned aside four more stops in the second half for the Brewers.
 
For The Brewers
  • Holman scored her team leading seventh goal of the season and picked up her first career assist in the victory. Saturday's scoring output puts Holman in a tie for the team lead with 15 points and the game winning goal is her team leading third of the campaign.
  • McGrath tallied for the sixth time and assisted on her third goal of the season to join Holman atop the team leaderboard in points with 15.
  • Panarelli picked up her fourth goal of the season and became the fifth Brewer to reach double-figures in points.
  • Franklin deposited her sixth goal of the year and is a point off the team lead with 14.
  • Valle recorded her eighth point of the season after recording her fourth helper of the year on the Brewers' final tally.
  • Shea earned the win in goal with eight stops, just one off of her career-high, and now holds a 0.63 goals against average and an .854 save percentage.
 
For The Saints
  • Donahue scored her team leading fifth goal of the season in the first half.
  • Borque picked up her team leading fifth helper of the season.
  • Zoe Davenport suffered the loss in goal after making six saves for the Saints.
 
Game Statistics
  • St. Lawrence outshot Vassar 20-13 overall while Vassar finished with a 10-9 edge in shots on goal.
  • Vassar closed the with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
