Brewers’ Winning Streak Stopped By Visiting Union

Gelb, Harvey net double-figures

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end Friday evening following a 60-49 loss to visiting Union. Senior Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) recorded her seventh straight double-double and classmate Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) added 13 points for the Brewers.
 
Friday's loss drops Vassar to 11-5 overall on the season and to 7-2 against Liberty League rivals, while Union improves to 10-6 and 7-2 in conference play.
 
First Half
  • A back-and-forth battle to start, Union opened a 19-11 lead through 10 minutes of play after closing the first quarter on a 10-0 run.
  • After a Harvey triple gave the Brewers an 11-9 advantage, Union got a Grace Ardito lay-in to knot the score.
  • A Kate Peek three-pointer and an Olivia Cunningham bucket in the final minute gave the visitors an eight-point edge heading into the second frame.
  • An Emma Riley conversion early in the second stanza pushed Union in front 21-11, the first of four times the Union lead would reach as many as 10 points prior to halftime.
  • Vassar used an 8-0 run of its own, fueled by six points from Harvey, to slice its deficit to 27-25 with 70 seconds left before halftime.
  • A Jenna Forman lay-in for Union would close out the first half scoring in the final minute of the quarter and send the visitors to the intermission with a 29-25 advantage.
  • Vassar struggled from the field in the first half, closing the opening 20 minutes shooting just 25-percent overall and 28.6-percent from three-point range.
  • Union shot 41.4-percent in the first half despite a 1-for-8 showing from behind the arc.
  • Harvey led the Brewers at the break with nine points.
  • Cunningham paced Union with seven first half tallies.
 
Second Half
  • Vassar would never be able to pull even in the second half and fell behind 37-28 on a Jelena Perovic jumper with just under six minutes left in the third period.
  • The advantage grew to 41-30 on a Perovic putback with 2:36 left in the frame, the Garnet Chargers largest lead to that point in the game.
  • Vassar would whittle its disadvantage down to 43-37 following a Gelb bucket with 21 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
  • Union quickly pushed its lead back to 48-38 on another Perovic conversion early in the final stanza.
  • The Brewers would get as close as eight points in the final stanza, but would be unable to pull any closer.
  • Union spread its lead to a game-high 58-45 lead on a Peek lay-in and would not let its advantage slip below double-figures the rest of the way.
  • Vassar closed the second half shooting just 28-percent and went 1-for-9 from behind the arc after the break.
  • Union improved to 43.3-percent shooting in the second half.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb equaled the game-high in scoring with 18 points and led the team with 10 rebounds. Gelb finished the contest with a block and a pair of steals.
  • Harvey netted 13 points after going 4-for-8 from the floor with a trio of triples. Harvey hauled in four rebounds and swiped three steals.
  • Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) finished with six points, eight rebounds and two steals.
 
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Perovic joined Gelb with a game-high 18 points, going 8-for-16 from the floor.
  • Peek scored 10 points off the bench.
  • Forman totaled nine points and led all players with 13 rebounds and six blocked shots.
  • Riley scored seven points, collected nine rebounds and handed out three assists.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 26.4-percent from the floor in the game and went 3-for-16 from three-point range.
  • Union converted at 42.4-percent overall and finished just 2-for-13 from bonus distance.
  • Vassar outscored Union 18-8 from the free-throw line.
  • Union controlled the paint with a 34-22 edge in points inside the lane.
