Brewers Sweep Season Series From Skidmore; Run Winning Streak To Six

McDermed nets 30 in victory

Poughkeepsie, NY – Junior Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) poured in a game-high 30 points and Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) finished with a double-double as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team completed the regular season series sweep of Skidmore with a 72-55 home win Tuesday evening.
 
Vassar wins its sixth straight game and moves to 11-4 overall on the season and 7-1 in Liberty League play, while Skidmore slips to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in league play.
 
First Half
  • Vassar opened the game on an 8-0 run, keyed by a three-point play and a triple from McDermed.
  • After Skidmore responded with 10-4 spurt to slice its disadvantage to 12-10, Vassar closed the quarter with the final seven points to grab its largest lead of the quarter at 19-10.
  • Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) sparked the closing run for the Brewers with five points, including a three-pointer that made the score 17-10 with 62 seconds left in the frame.
  • Vassar shot an efficient 53.8-percent from the floor over the opening 10 minutes and connected on two of its three triple tries.
  • Skidmore was held to 27.8-percent shooting over the first period and went without a three-pointer in five attempts.
  • Vassar spread its lead to double-figures for the first time when McDermed opened the second period scoring with a triple to move the lead to 22-10.
  • The advantage grew to a half-high 15 points on a Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) three-pointer at the 8:24 Vassar, giving Vassar a 25-10 lead.
  • After an Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) bucket gave Vassar a 33-21 lead with just under three minutes left in the half, Skidmore scored nine of the final 15 points to pull to within seven points at the intermission.
  • A Becca Horger lay-in and an Andi Levitz three-pointer in the closing seconds of the half sent the two teams into the intermission with Vassar leading 37-30.
  • The Brewers continued their efficient first half shooting, converting at just shy of 47-percent in the second stanza.
  • Vassar closed the half shooting an even 50-percent overall and went 5-for-11 from three-point range.
  • Skidmore converted at 37.5-percent in the opening 20 minutes and finished the first half 2-for-10 from behind the arc.
  • McDermed went 6-for-8 from the field in the first half and led all scorers with 15 first half points.
 
Second Half
  • Coming out of the break, Vassar pushed its lead back to double-figures on a Lovett conversion that made the score 41-31 just over three minutes into the third quarter.
  • Vassar later closed the quarter on a 12-6 run to finish the frame with a 55-41 advantage.
  • A Gelb lay-in with 33 seconds left in the period pushed Vassar in front 55-39, a game-high advantage.
  • Vassar continued its hot shooting, converting at an even 50-percent again in the third, connecting on two more three-pointers.
  • Skidmore was limited to 36.4-percent shooting in the third quarter and hit on one of its two three-point field goals.
  • The Brewers did not allow Skidmore closer than nine points in the final period and pushed its lead to 67-51 on a McDermed layup with 3:18 left to play.
  • The advantage grew to a game-high 19 points when a Margo Gramiak (Wilmington, DE) free-throw pushed Vassar in front 72-53 with 31 seconds left.
  • Vassar finished the second half shooting 44.8-percent and connected on four three-pointers.
  • Skidmore finished the second half shooting 10-for-31 from the floor and 1-for-8 from three-point range.
 
For The Brewers
  • McDermed led all players in the game with 30 points, her second 30-point performance of the season. McDermed finished the game 11-for-19 from the field with three triples. McDermed rounded out a big game with eight rebounds and six assists.
  • Gelb recorded her sixth straight double-double with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Gelb went 6-for-9 from the floor, blocked a pair of shots and handed out three assists.
  • Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) chipped in seven points off the bench.
  • Ahearn connected on a pair of triples for six points and contributed two assists.
  • Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) posted five points and hauled in five rebounds.
 
For The Thoroughbreds
  • Sophia Martinez paced the Thoroughbreds with 11 points off the bench
  • Claudia Schneider finished with 10 points and added five rebounds.
  • Emmy Plage hauled in a team-high eight rebounds and swiped three steals.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the win shooting 46.4-percent overall and went 9-for-23 from three-point range.
  • Skidmore converted at 34.9-percent and finished just 3-for-18 from three-point range.
  • Vassar closed the game with a 34-28 edge in paint points.
  • Second chance scoring went to the Brewers by a slim 9-6 margin.
