Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball team saw its three game winning streak stopped on Tuesday evening as the Brewers dropped a 92-81 conference matchup against Skidmore at home. Sophomore
Shea Fitzgerald poured in a game-high 28 points as Vassar falls to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play while Skidmore improves to 5-10 on the season and 1-7 in Liberty League play.
First Half
- Skidmore opened the contest with the first seven points behind two buckets from Jack LaGarde and a triple from Charlie Fantom.
- VC cut the lead to 10-6 after a triple from sophomore Shea Fitzgerald and a layup from junior Nathan Denham at the 15:38 mark.
- The Thoroughbreds increased its advantage to double figures at 17-6 on a jumper from Joey Skoric before Vassar answered with a 9-2 run behind threes from Fitzgerald, sophomore Avery Lee and senior Alex Walters to get within 19-15.
- Aidan Roy's three-pointer extended the lead to nine at 24-15 with 10:08 remaining for Skidmore.
- VC trimmed the lead down to two at 24-22 following another triple from Fitzgerald and back-to-back buckets from Denham with 9:21 to go.
- Skidmore went on a 12-3 run over the next five minutes as a three-point play from Skoric put the Thoroughbreds ahead 36-25 at the 3:11 mark.
- The Brewers used a five-point spurt to cut the lead to 41-36 at the half behind another triple from Walters and a Lee breakaway layup.
- Vassar closed the opening half shooting 38.2-percent while connecting on 8-for-16 from behind the three-point arc.
- Skidmore shot a blazing 59.3-percent overall in the opening stanza along with going 5-for-8 from three-point range.
Second Half
- A floater from sophomore Kreekor Karageuzian brought the Brewers within three early in the second half at 43-40.
- Hakeem Daphnis' three-point play put Skidmore ahead 49-42 with 16:19 remaining before VC got within two at 52-50 on a Fitzgerald triple.
- Roy's jumper put Skidmore back ahead by six at the 10:25 mark until Vassar got back within two after two free throws from Denham and a jumper from Fitgzerald.
- Seven straight points from the Thoroughbreds following five points from Charlie Weisberg and a lay-in from Skoric pushed the lead to 69-60 with just over eight minutes left in the second half.
- Skidmore's lead grew to double digits with 6:41 remaining as a layup from Ethan Madeiros put the Thoroughbreds ahead 73-62.
- VC reeled off a 15-4 run to get within two at 79-77 with 2:21 remaining behind eight points from junior Sacha Greenberg.
- Skidmore closed the game on a 13-4 run on seven points from Daphnis to take the 92-81 victory.
- Vassar shot 53.3-percent overall while going 4-for-12 from the three-point line in the second half.
- The Thoroughbreds continued their hot shooting in the second half as they shot 64.3-percent overall and 5-for-9 from three-point distance.
For The Brewers
- Fitzgerald scored a game-high 28 points on 11-for-20 shooting (5-for-9 from three) along with three assists and three steals.
- Lee added 18 points and two helpers while Denham supplied 12 points, four rebounds and four steals.
- Greenberg tallied eight points off the bench and Karageuzian recorded four points, three boards and two assists.
For The Thoroughbreds
- Daphnis tallied a team-high 23 points on 8-for-15 from the field while Skoric notched a double-double with 15 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.
- Roy registered 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting along with LaGarde supplying eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.
- Fantom added 10 points and five rebounds while Weisberg tallied nine points off the bench.
Game Statistics
- Vassar ended the game shooting 45.3-percent overall from the field while going 12-for-28 from three and 11-for-15 from the free throw line.
- Skidmore clsoed teh game shooting an incredible 61.8-percent overall while connecting on 10-for-17 from deep and 10-for-12 from the free throw stripe.
- Points off turnovers were dead even at 12 apiece while Skidmore held a slim edge at 34-28 in points in the paint.
