Avery Lee tallied a career-high 33 points along with classmate
Shea Fitzgerald adding 23 points as the Vassar College Men's Basketball team outlasted Union 93-89 in overtime at home on Friday evening. Vassar's record improves to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in league play while the Garnet Chargers drop to 8-8 overall and 4-5 in Liberty League action.
First Half
- Vassar opened up the game with a 9-2 lead as Lee and senior Alex Walters each connected on a three-pointer early.
- Union cut the lead down to two at 14-12 on a lay-in from Jaden Jauregui before Vassar went on a 14-2 run, led by two layups from sophomore Eric Zhang and two triples from Fitzgerald, to go ahead 28-14 with 10:15 remaining.
- Another Walters triple extended the lead to a game-high 19 points at the 6:24 mark until Union went on a 10-0 run to get within single digits on a Jack Plesser bucket with 3:05 left in the half.
- A three from Fitzgerald put the Brewers back ahead by double digits at 45-34 with 11 seconds left before Tanner Tedesco countered with a three of his own to put Union within 45-37 at the half.
- Vassar shot 48.6-percent overall in the first half while connecting on 10-for-20 from the three-point line.
- Union finished the first half shooting an even 50-percent while going just 2-for-7 from bonus distance.
Second Half
- The Garnet Chargers scored the first 10 points coming out of the halftime break as two free throws from Brendan Reid put Union ahead for the first time at 47-45.
- Following a tip-in from Reid to make it 51-51 with 13:42 remaining, VC reeled off a 10-2 run as a jumper from junior Nathan Denham pushed the Brewers ahead 62-53 with 10:13 remaining.
- VC regained its double digit advantage at the 5:43 mark as a jumper from sophomore Sebastian Medina gave the Brewers a 73-60 lead.
- After a lay-in from senior Luke Adams to go up 77-64 with 4:13 remaining, Union rallied with a 12-0 run as two free throws from Christian Dufort got the Garnet Chargers within one with 1:10 left in regulation.
- Lee split a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to make it 80-78 before Tedesco was fouled on the other end with six seconds left and connected on both to even the score at 80.
- Vassar got a three-pointer off at the horn but it went long and sent the game in overtime.
- The Brewers concluded the second half shooting 41.4-percent from the field and were held to just 2-for-8 from the three-point line.
- Union closed the second half shooting 47.2-percent overall but were limited to 2-for-10 from three-point territory.
Overtime
- Vassar scored the first three points of the overtime period behind one free throw from Fitzgerald and two from Lee.
- A layup from Dufort evened the score at 83 with three minutes remaining before a bucket each from sophomore Kreekor Karageuzian and Lee pushed Vassar ahead by four.
- Union got within two on a Plesser bucket with 28 seconds left until VC connected on four free throws, two each from Lee and Medina, to extend the lead to 92-86.
- Tedesco drilled a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to cut the lead to three but a free throw from junior JP Miranda sealed the conference victory for Vassar.
For The Brewers
- Lee finished with his career-high 33 points on 11-for-22 from the field, including five three-pointers, and went 6-for-8 from the free throw line.
- Fitzgerald garnered 23 points, five boards and four assists along with Medina adding seven points, three assists and five rebounds.
- Denham registered six points, eight rebounds and two steals while Karageuzian recorded four points, seven boards and two helpers.
- Walters added eight points off the bench along with Adams chipping in five points, three boards and two assists.
For The Garnet Chargers
- Plesser poured in a team-high 27 points and nine rebounds while Tedesco supplied 24 points, seven assists, three steals and four rebounds.
- Reid finished with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Jauregui tallied 11 points and five boards off the bench.
- Dufort recorded nine points and seven rebounds along with Matthew Garside registering six points, four assists, eight rebounds and two steals.
Game Statistics
- Vassar finished the contest shooting 46.3-percent overall while knocking down 12-for-28 from the three-point line and 19-for-30 from the free throw stripe.
- Union shot 46.1-percent from the field while being limited 5-for-21 from three and went 14-for-20 from the free throw line.
- VC held a slim 11-10 edge in points off turnovers and 14-5 in fast break points.
- Union held a large 52-30 advantage in points in the paint.
