Gelb Reaches Three Milestones In Overtime Victory Against RIT

Senior set single game scoring record, nets 1,000th career point

Poughkeepsie, NY – Senior Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) scored a career-high 36 points and in the process reached the 1,000-career point milestone and set the program's single game scoring record as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team rallied for an 85-76 overtime victory over visiting RIT Saturday afternoon.
 
Saturday's win gives the Brewers five straight victories and improves them to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in Liberty League action. RIT slips back to the .500 mark overall at 7-7 and to 5-2 in conference play.
 
First Half
  • In a high scoring first period, Vassar used a 7-0 run late in the quarter to open a 20-15 lead. Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) started the run with a triple followed by buckets from Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) and Gelb.
  • RIT came back with a three-pointer from Sophia Spizuoco to cut the Vassar lead to 20-18 with 36 seconds left in the opening frame.
  • The Brewers went 8-for-14 from the floor in the first 10 minutes, including a pair of three-pointers.
  • RIT went 8-for-13 from the floor in the first quarter and also knocked down two three-pointers.
  • The Brewers trailed by as many as five points on two occasions in the second quarter before knotting the score on a personal 7-2 run from Gelb that knotted the score at 32-32.
  • RIT jumped back in front in the final minute on a Maddy Ramsgard bucket that sent the Tigers into the intermission with a slim 34-32 advantage.
  • The Brewers finished the first half shooting 44.4-percent from the field and knocked down three triples.
  • RIT shot a blistering 62.5-percent from the field prior to halftime and knocked in two triples.
 
Second Half
  • Gelb scored Vassar's first six points coming out of halftime, reaching 1,000 career points on a lay-in that gave the Brewers a 38-37 lead just 1:37 into the quarter.
  • After the two teams traded the lead five times, the Tigers jumped in front 50-46 on a Ben Kayser-Cochran bucket with 2:26 left in the period.
  • Ahearn and McDermed converted back buckets to knot the score at 50-50 before a Ramsgard bucket with 37 seconds left gave RIT a 52-50 lead through three stanzas.
  • A Faye Kaplinski bucket early in the fourth quarter pushed RIT in front 54-50.
  • The visitors maintained the lead until an Ahearn trey with 7:28 left in regulation moved Vassar back in front 56-54.
  • A quick 5-0 run from the Tigers moved them back in the lead by a 59-56 score ahead of a three-point play from Gelb that brought the Brewers even again at 59-59.
  • RIT came back with seven straight points to grab their largest lead of the game at 66-59 on a Kaitlyn Bockelman triple with 4:03 remaining in regulation.
  • Another Ahearn triple sliced the disadvantage to a single point at 68-67.
  • McDermed converted a traditional three-point play to move Vassar in front 70-68 with 71 seconds left in regulation.
  • RIT answered once again with a pair of free-throws to even the score through 40 minutes of play.
  • Vassar finished the second 20 minutes going 15-for-35 from the floor with a trio of three-pointers.
  • RIT went 15-for-29 from the floor and went 4-for-8 from three-point range.
 
Overtime
  • Vassar opened the extra frame with the first five points on a trey from McDermed and a lay-in from Gelb to open a quick 75-70 lead.
  • The Brewers did not allow RIT closer than three points in the overtime period and converted four free-throws over the final 1:17 of the period to grab their largest lead of the game, the final nine-point decision.
  • The Brewers went 4-for-5 from the floor in overtime, including a three-pointer.
  • RIT was 3-for-8 in overtime overall and was outscored by six from the free-throw line.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb closed a career day going 11-for-17 from the floor and 12-for-13 from the charity stripe on her way to the highest single game in program history. Gelb rounded out the day with 10 rebounds, three assists and five steals.
  • Gelb surpasses the previous single game record of 34 points set by Emily Haeuser against Thomas on November 21, 2019.
  • McDermed netted 27 points on Saturday and collected eight rebounds to go along with six assists.
  • Ahearn poured in a season-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including a 3-for-4 effort from three-point range.
  • Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) hauled in seven rebounds and chipped in six points.
 
For The Tigers
  • Ramsgard led the way with a team-high 20 points and finished a strong day with 11 rebounds and five assists.
  • Bockelman chipped in 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting.
  • Kaplinski finished with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.
  • Caroline Henderson and Kayser-Cochran each scored 11 points with Henderson securing eight rebounds and handing out three assists.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the game shooting 46.3-percent overall and knocked down seven three-pointers.
  • RIT converted at an efficient 54.1-percent and connected on six triples.
  • Vassar outscored RIT 16-4 from the free-throw line.
  • Vassar finished the contest with a 17-4 edge in points off of turnovers.
  • The Brewers controlled the transition game with a 13-2 advantage in fast break points.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar closes out the season series against Skidmore on Tuesday in Poughkeepsie.
  • RIT plays host to Clarkson on January 24.
