Vassar Outlasts RPI In Overtime

Quartet of Brewers scoring in double-figures

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team earned its fourth straight victory Friday evening with a hard fought 58-57 overtime victory over RPI. Junior Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) led four Brewers in double-figures with a team-high 16 points.
 
Friday's win pushes Vassar to 9-4 overall on the season and 5-1 in Liberty League play, while the Engineers drop to 9-5 overall and 3-4 in conference competition.
 
First Half
  • Vassar struggled from the field out of the gate, converting at just 26.3-percent in the opening stanza.
  • The Brewers limited RPI to 37.5-percent shooting in the first quarter and did allow a free-throw attempt to the Engineers.
  • Vassar trailed by as many as five points in the first frame, before a 9-0 run capped by a Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) three-pointer that moved Vassar in front 14-10 with 1:39 left in the period.
  • The Ippolito triple would be the Brewers' last of the quarter as they finished the opening 10 minutes with a 14-12 advantage.
  • Vassar would not trail in the second period until the 4:49 mark when a Siena Smith jumper pushed the Engineers in front 19-18.
  • The two teams would trade the lead three times over the remainder of the half, before layups from Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) and McDermed sent Vassar into the intermission with a 24-21 lead.
  • The Brewers shot 29.4-percent from the floor over the opening 20 minutes and went just 1-for-8 from behind the arc.
  • RPI shot 34.5-percent overall in the first half and misfired on all six of its three-point attempts.
 
Second Half
  • Vassar pulled back in front by five points, at 28-23, on a pair of Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) free-throws at he 6:42 mark of the third frame.
  • The Brewers hung on to the lead until a Callie Flynn bucket pushed RPI back in front 31-30 with just under four minutes left in the quarter.
  • The teams would alternate the lead four times after the Flynn conversion before a pair of McDermed free-throws in the closing seconds of the quarter made the score 39-39 through 30 minutes of play.
  • The fourth period continued to be back-and-forth with the Engineers grabbing a three-point lead on a Siena Smith fast break bucket with 7:23 left in regulation.
  • After the two teams traded the lead again, a Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) three-pointer with just shy of three minutes left in the quarter gave the Brewers a 51-49 lead.
  • The Vassar lead grew to 53-49 on a Gelb bucket with 2:13 left with what proved to be Vassar's final field goal of regulation time.
  • RPI used a pair of Smith free-throws and a Flynn bucket in the final minute to knot the score at 53-53.
  • Vassar had a look at the horn blocked, sending the game to overtime.
  • The Brewers went 9-for-29 from the floor over the final 20 minutes of regulation time and went 2-for-9 from three-point range.
  • RPI was 14-for-36 from the field in the final two quarters of regulation time, connecting on a single three-pointer.
  • Vassar outscored 9-3 from the free-throw line in the third and fourth frames.
 
Overtime
  • There was just one field goal made in the overtime period, a layup from Ahearn that made the score 57-55 with 54 seconds left to play.
  • The Brewers never trailed in overtime with a free-throw from Gelb in the final seconds the difference in the final score.
  • RPI went 0-for-3 from the floor in the extra period.
  • Vassar finished the overtime session 1-for-6 from the floor.
 
For The Brewers
  • McDermed went 6-for-14 from the floor on the way to the team-high point total. McDermed closed a strong all-around game a rebound shy of a double-double and added five assists, four blocks and three steals.
  • Lovett netted a career-high 14 points for Vassar, adding seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.
  • Gelb finished the win with 11 points, rounding out a double-double with 10 rebounds while handing out seven assists. Friday's scoring output moves Gelb to within 23 points of 1,000 in her career.
  • Ahearn reached double-figures for the second time this season with 10 points, going 4-for-8 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers.
 
For The Engineers
  • Smith poured in a game-high 21 points, going 8-for-17 from the floor, while adding 10 rebounds and a trio of steals.
  • Flynn chipped in 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting and led all players with 13 rebounds.
  • Tyler Hormazabel closed the night with five points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Engineers.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar was held to 29.0-percent from the floor and went 3-for-18 from three-point range.
  • RPI converted at 35.3-percent for the game, but hit on just one of its 11 three-point attempts.
  • Vassar finished the night with a 15-8 from free-throw.
  • The game featured 10 times and 19 lead changes.

  • Vassar closes the weekend with a home tilt against RIT Saturday afternoon.
  • RPI travels to Bard on Saturday.
