Brewers Topple Clarkson, Sweep North Country Trip

Gelb nets 26 in victory

Potsdam, NY – Senior Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) scored a game-high 26 points and both Gelb and Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) finished with double-doubles as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team swept its North Country swing with a 61-51 triumph at Clarkson Saturday afternoon.
 
Saturday's victory, Vassar's third straight, pushes it to 8-4 overall on the season and 4-1 in Liberty League play. Clarkson falls to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in conference action.
 
First Half
  • Vassar led wire-to-wire after scoring the first three points of the contest.
  • A Gelb layup pushed Vassar in front 8-2 at the 7:36 mark of the opening stanza.
  • Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) moved the Brewers in front 13-9 midway through the first quarter with a three-point field goal before a pair of Gelb free-throws moved the advantage to 18-8 late in the frame.
  • Gelb scored the first three points of the second stanza to make the score 22-10 and the Brewers maintained a double-figure lead heading into halftime.
  • A pair of Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) free-throws in the final half minute of the second quarter sent Vassar into the half with a 35-18 advantage.
  • Vassar shot an even 50-percent from the floor over the second 10 minutes of the game and went into halftime converting at 39.3-percent overall while going 3-for-11 from three-point range.
  • Clarkson was held to 25.8-percent shooting overall and went without a three-pointer in seven attempts.
 
Second Half
  • Clarkson climbed back to within eight points on a pair of Cassidy Dumont free-throws at the 6:33 mark of the third frame.
  • Vassar pushed the lead back to double-figures on a Tash Thompson (Los Altos Hills, CA) layup and jumped in front 45-33 on an Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) bucket at the 3:45 mark.
  • McDermed sent the Brewers into the fourth frame with a 49-36 advantage after a layup in the closing seconds of the quarter.
  • Clarkson tallied the first six points of the final period and pulled to within 49-42.
  • A three-point play from Gelb pushed the Vassar lead back out to 54-42 with 5:47 left to play.
  • The Golden Knights put together one more run, pulling to within 54-49 on a pair of Raelin Burns free-throws with 3:44 left in the contest.
  • The Brewers made four straight free-throws to spread the lead back out to nine points and got a free-throw from Regan to make the score 61-49 in the final minute.
  • Vassar held Clarkson without a field goal over the final 4:20 of the fourth period to claim the final 10-point decision.
  • Vassar improved to 42.9-percent shooting after halftime and went 8-for-11 from the free-throw line.
  • Clarkson shot 37.9-percent in the second half and made its only two three-point field goals of the game after halftime.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb led all scorers in the game with 26 points, going 10-for-15 from the floor. Gelb also led all players with 11 rebounds and contributed three assists, four blocks and four steals.
  • McDermed finished the weekend with 10 points and 10 rebounds and chipped in four assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.
  • Regan posted nine points, five rebounds and two assists in the victory. '
  • Lovett and Thompson each scored six points with Lovett adding four rebounds and a pair of blocks.
 
For The Golden Knights
  • Dumont led Clarkson with 12 points, adding six rebounds and a trio of assists.
  • Bella Doyle totaled 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.
  • Elizabeth Aiossa chipped in 10 points and a pair of assists.
  • Fallon Griffin totaled seven points off the bench.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 40.8-percent for the game and went 3-for-17 from three-point range.
  • Clarkson converted at 31.7-percent and finished 2-for-15 from behind the arc.
  • The Brewers held an 18-11 advantage in scoring from the free-throw line.
  • Vassar held a slim 32-28 edge in paint scoring.
  • Vassar controlled the transition game with a 14-2 advantage in fast break points.

  • Vassar returns home on January 17 to take on RPI.
