Wiley Ties Career-High in Saves In Narrow Loss to #5 Christopher Newport

Sophomore recorded 11 saves against the fifth-ranked Captains

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team pushed #5 Christopher Newport to the brink on Saturday afternoon as sophomore Grace Wiley tied her career-high in saves with 11 before the Captains scored a late fourth quarter goal to earn a 2-1 victory at Weinberg Field. The Brewers record moves to 2-7 overall while CNU pushes its record to 7-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Captains recorded the first tally of the game off a penalty corner just 1:37 into the first quarter as Riley Iasiello knocked home an assist from Courtney Hughlett.
  • Vassar answered the early goal about five minutes later off of a corner of their own with sophomore Karina Hoffman scoring her first goal of the year on a feed from classmate Anna Hazewindus to even the score at one.
  • Each team had a shot saved in the second quarter as sophomore Sydney Kovel was turned away by Lily Kerr and Katie Abdenschoen was knocked away by Wiley to keep the score tied at one.
  • Wiley registered two more saves in the third period to keep the game even heading into the final quarter.
  • CNU scored the game-winner with 10:10 remaining in the fourth quarter as Avery Mast fired one in the back of the goal on a turnaround feed from Ellie Nuckols.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Hoffman scored her first goal of the campaign while Hazewindus picked up her second assist of the season.
  • First year Zoe Robinson, Kovel, Hazewindus and Hoffman all registered a shot on goal.
  • Wiley was spectacular in goal for Vassar as the sophomore made a career-high tying 11 saves.
FOR THE CAPTAINS
  • Iasiello and Mast each tallied a goal along with Co. Hughlett and Nuckols recording an assist.
  • Delaney Norr, Caroline Hughlett and Abdenschoen had three shots on goal apiece while Iasiello added two shots on net.
  • Kerr earned her seventh victory of the season in goal as she turned away three shots.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar will return to Weinberg Field on Wednesday evening against Scranton at 7:00 p.m.
  • Christopher Newport will play host to Centre next Saturday.
