Field Hockey Upended By #25 Scranton

Hazewindus scores first career goal for the Brewers

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team took on its third nationally-ranked foe of the season on Wednesday evening as the Brewers fell 3-1 to #25 Scranton at Weinberg Field. Sophomore Anna Hazewindus scored her first career goal for the Brewers as they move to 2-8 overall while the Royals improve to 10-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scranton scored two first quarter goals to open the contest as Annie Shaw tallied the first goal on an assist from Bridget Abraldes about 10 minutes into the opening period.
  • The Royals earned the 2-0 lead following the opening quarter on an Abraldes goal off a feed from Shana Goldsmith with just under three minutes left in the quarter.
  • Katie Redding put Scranton ahead 3-0 two and a half minutes into the second quarter following an assist from Elle Collins.
  • Vassar recorded the lone shot of the third quarter as Hazewindus scored her first career goal on a shot that deflected off of a Scranton defender following an insert from junior Sofia Beseth.
  • Sophomore Ella Martin threatened late to trim the lead twice but Scranton goalie Julie Rogel made two saves to earn the 3-1 victory.
FOR THE ROYALS
  • Abraldes recorded a goal and an assist while Redding and Shaw each added a goal.
  • Goldsmith and Collins each recorded an assist for the Royals.
  • Gianna Travia earned the victory in goal in 30 minutes of action and made one save while Rogel made two saves in 30 minutes in goal.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Hazewindus scored her first career goal while Beseth recorded her first assist of the season.
  • Martin tallied two shots on goal along with senior Tori Baker adding a shot on net.
  • Junior Gianna Hoover made her sixth defensive save of the season while sophomore Grace Wiley turned away three shots in goal.
