Women's Volleyball Battles Tough Against Williams

Kaplan and McAusland combine for 32 kills for Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team returned home to Kenyon Hall for the first time in two weeks as the Brewers battled tough against Williams, falling 23-25, 17-25, 25-23, 21-25 in four sets on Wednesday night. Vassar's record moves to 2-9 on the season while the Ephs improve to 7-3 overall.

FIRST SET
  • Williams took a 6-4 lead to open the set as Annalise Fricke, Helen Qian, Kate Lane and Sidra Wohlwend each buried winners.
  • Vassar cut the lead down to 12-11 after a kill and ace from junior Rebecca Gutierrez along with kills from sophomore Holland Kaplan and senior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield.
  • The Ephs used a five-point stretch to build the lead to 17-12 following two Fricke kills and an ace from Kami Israelski.
  • Vassar roared back to take a 21-20 lead following two winners from sophomore Maura McAusland and one winner from Gutierrez.
  • Williams took the final three points of the set, led by two kills from Fricke and one from Qian to take the opening set.
SECOND SET
  • Vassar opened the second set with a 5-3 advantage on kills from Kaplan, Anthony-Brumfield, Gutierrez and senior Julia Hale.
  • The Ephs responded by taking a 14-10 lead after a four-point surge, including kills from Fricke and Keely Campuzano.
  • The Brewers trimmed the advantage to 17-15 following a kill apiece from Kaplan, Hale and McAusland.
  • Five straight Williams points, led by two Tatum Baker kills, pushed the lead to 22-15 as the Ephs took the set on another winner from Fricke.
THIRD SET
  • The Brewers took four of the first five points in the third set as sophomore Francesca Medrano landed an ace along with a block from McAusland and a kill from Kaplan.
  • Williams took a slim 9-8 lead after a Fricke winner before Kaplan's kill evened the set at 10 all.
  • The Ephs built out a 19-15 advantage following a block from Maya Thompson and Fricke before VC responded with five straight points and took a 20-19 lead on an ace from junior Ellie Kogan.
  • Back-to-back kills from McAusland clinched the third set for Vassar at 25-23.
FOURTH SET
  • Williams answered with a quick 10-4 advantage in the fourth stanza as Fricke buried two winners along with back-to-back aces from Morgan Daetz.
  • Vassar went down 13-9 on a kill from Baker before answering with six straight points, led by two consecutive aces from Kaplan.
  • The Ephs regained the lead at 16-15 after two straight Fricke kills and extended the lead to 20-17 on a Lane winner.
  • Vassar cut the lead to 22-20 after winners from Kaplan and Gutierrez until the Ephs took the set after a kill from Lane and an ace from Qian,
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Kaplan recorded a season-high 17 kills along with two aces and seven digs while McAusland finished with 15 kills, 15 digs and three blocks.
  • Gutierrez tallied five kills, two blocks and an ace along with Hale adding four kills and two blocks.
  • Medrano handed out a match-high 23 assists and five digs while senior Molly Ardren recorded 16 assists, two kills and two blocks.
  • Kogan finished with 11 digs and two aces while senior Hailey Hayes registered eight digs.
FOR THE EPHS
  • Fricke buried a match-high 18 winners while Campuzano added eight kills and a block.
  • Lane tallied eight kills and three blocks along with Baker recording seven kills and 10 digs.
  • Daetz registered a team-high 20 assists, three aces and seven digs while Lily Carstens added 17 assists and 11 digs.
  • Wohlwend lifted a match-high 17 digs at libero for the Ephs.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar is off until Friday, October 4 when they open up Liberty League play at home against Clarkson at 6:00 p.m.
  • Williams returns to NESCAC play against Middlebury on the road on Friday.
