Women's Volleyball Drops Liberty League Opener to Clarkson

McAusland tallies 10 kills, three aces and 11 digs for the Brewers

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team opened the Liberty League slate on Friday evening as the Brewers fell 22-25, 21-25, 14-25 to Clarkson at Kenyon Hall. The Brewers drop to 2-10 overall and 0-1 in conference while the Golden Knights improve to 5-10 on the season and 1-2 in Liberty League play.

FIRST SET
  • Clarkson took an early 6-3 lead as Marin Hangliter tallied a kill and an ace along with a block and kill from Grace Hanson.
  • Vassar rallied back to earn a 12-11 advantage after three straight points, led by an ace from senior Hailey Hayes and kills from junior Rebecca Gutierrez and sophomore Holland Kaplan.
  • The Golden Knights countered to take a slim 17-16 edge following two kills from Tess Sorel before Vassar rattled off four straight, led by a winner and an ace from sophomore Maura McAusland to go ahead 20-17.
  • Clarkson responded with seven of the next eight points to go ahead 24-21 on two kills from Allyson Treichel and an ace from Cecilia Velardi.
  • Gutierrez's kill trimmed the set lead to two before another Treichel winner put the Golden Knights up one set to none.
SECOND SET
  • Teams traded points in the early stages of the second set as senior Molly Ardren's service ace evened the set at six apiece.
  • Clarkson tallied seven straight points behind two aces from Olivia Baxter and two blocks from Emily Alexander and Treichel.
  • The Golden Knights lead expanded to 19-9 after a block from Ashley Currier and Sorel and went to set point after back-to-back Hangliter winners.
  • Vassar rattled off six consecutive points following three kills and a block from senior Julia Hale and a winner from classmate Morgan Miller to trim the lead to 24-21.
  • Clarkson ended the Vassar rally with a winner from Alexander to take the set.
THIRD SET
  • Vassar earned a 6-4 lead to begin the set as first year Erin Lovett buried a winner followed by an Ardren ace.
  • The Golden Knights countered with seven straight points behind two Alexander winners and an ace from Baxter to push ahead 14-7.
  • The Brewers reduced the advantage to 16-12 after kills from Kaplan and Lovett along with a block from Gutierrez and Lovett.
  • Clarkson went on another big run, scoring seven straight points behind two aces from Treichel and two kills from Currier.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • McAusland finished with team-highs in kills with 10, aces with three and digs with 11.
  • Kaplan added six winners and two aces along with Hale adding five kills and two solo blocks.
  • Lovett finished with three kills and three blocks and Gutierrez recorded two kills and three blocks.
  • Hayes recorded eight assists, two aces and seven digs while Ardren handed out a team-high 13 assists, two aces and five digs.
  • Sophomore Ellie Kogan lifted eight digs for the Brewers.
FOR THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
  • Hanson recorded a team-high eight kills and added two blocks while Currier tallied six kills, 20 assists, two blocks and 17 digs.
  • Alexander added six kills and three blocks and Treichel finished with five kills, two aces and six blocks.
  • Hangliter tallied four kills and 11 digs while Sorel buried four winners.
  • Velardi tallied 10 digs and Baxter recorded a team-high four service aces.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar will begin a four-match road trip on Friday evening against William Smith at 7:00 p.m.
  • Clarkson heads to New Paltz tomorrow for a tri-match with the Hawks and Baruch.
