Vassar Drops Hard Fought Decision To #18 NYU

McGrath nets two goals for the Brewers

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Soccer team rallied from two goals down in the second half to even the score at 3-3, but a late goal from #18 NYU pushed the visiting Violets passed the Brewers 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field. Riley McGrath (Coronda, CA) scored twice for the Brewers and sophomore Cecelia Wager (Brookline, MA) scored her first career goal.
 
Saturday's loss, Vassar's first defeat of the season, drops the Brewers to 4-1-2 overall, while NYU remains unbeaten and moves to 4-0-3 on the season.
 
How It Happened
  • NYU opened a quick 2-0 lead with consecutive goals just under two minutes apart in the middle stages of the first half.
  • Rena Kalargiros netted both goals for the Violets, opening the scoring at the 22:43 mark of the contest with an unassisted tally.
  • Kalargiros doubled the NYU lead at 24:22 when she deposited her second of the game, finishing off a feed from Kelli Keady.
  • Vassar cut its deficit in half at the 29:40 mark when McGrath scored for the first time in the game. She collected a loose ball above the box and nudged a shot off the post and just over the goal line to make the score 2-1.
  • NYU carried that 2-1 lead into the intermission on Saturday after holding an 8-5 edge in shots.
  • Corner kicks in the first 45 minutes on Saturday were even at 3-3.
  • Vassar keeper, Olivia Sandrew (San Diego, CA), closed the opening stanza with a pair of saves.
  • NYU netminder Riley Felsher turned aside three Vassar shots prior to halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, NYU spread its lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 54th minute.
  • Keady played a ball to Hope Neale inside the box and Neale tucked a shot under the bar at 53:36 to give the Violets their second two-goal advantage of the game.
  • Trailing by two, the Brewers got a pair of goals just over six minutes apart late in the second half to even the score at 3-3.
  • McGrath tallied for the second time when she headed in a crossing pass from Lily Brigman (Mebane, NC) at 77:54.
  • After getting with in a shot, Vassar evened the score in the 84th minute on Wager's first career tally.
  • Wager found a loose ball above the box and found the back of the net just inside the left post at 83:57 to level the contest.
  • After Vassar tied the score, NYU found the game winner just 1:23 later when Kalargiros collected a pass from Kealy and completed the hat trick at 85:20 to close out the scoring in the game.
  • NYU held a 13-3 advantage in shots after halftime and took the only two corner kicks of the second halftime.
  • Sandrew finished the second half with five more saves for the Brewers.
 
For The Brewers
  • McGrath scored her first two goals of the season and pushed her season point total to six, good for third on the team.
  • Wager scored for the first time in her career and moved her season point total to three with Saturday's marker.
  • Brigman collected her first point of the season with the assist on Vassar's second goal.
  • Madison Bouggess (Swedesboro, NJ) led the Brewers with three shots, including a shot on goal.
  • Liv Ivie (Agoura Hills, CA) and Diana Loera (Chula Vista, CA) each recorded a shot on goal.
  • Sandrew closed the contest with a career-high seven saves in goal.
 
For The Violets
  • Kalagiros tallied three times and led all players with five shots, including four on goal.
  •  Neale each her second goal of the season.
  • Keady recorded a pair of assists in the game.
  • Felsher made three saves in goal to earn the win.

  • NYU held a 21-8 advantage in overall shots and an 11-6 edge in shots on goal.
