Vassar Edges Drew; Collects Third Straight Victory

Raphan makes career-high seven saves

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Men's Soccer team scored its third straight 2-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon after outlasting visiting Drew at Gordon Field. Sophomore Eli Torrey (Philadelphia, PA) provided the game winning goal and classmate Jacob Raphan (Oceanside, NY) made a career-high seven saves to earn the win in goal.
 
Following its third straight victory, Vassar sits at 5-1 overall on the season and earns its fourth straight victory over the Rangers. Drew slips to 4-2-1 overall through seven contests.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar struck early with the game's first goal off the foot of First Year Arden Tobolski (Chapel Hill, NC) in the eighth minute.
  • Tobolski took a pass from Mauricio Mejia (Miami, FL) just inside the box and buried his seventh goal of the season at the 7:11 mark of the contest.
  • Drew wasted little time evening the score when it was awarded a penalty kick 89 seconds later.
  • James Cahill converted the penalty for the Rangers to make the score 1-1 just 8:40 into the game.
  • After the Tobolski marker, Vassar was limited to just one shot the remainder of the first half.
  • Drew finished the opening 45 minutes with a 7-4 advantage in shots.
  • Corner kicks prior to the break were even at 3-3.
  • The game remained deadlocked at a goal apiece until Torrey found the back of the net just over six minutes into the second half.
  • Mejia started the play by working along the touch line where found Jared Fiske (Livingston, NJ) just inside the top of the box. Fiske touched the ball over to Torrey who roofed the eventual game winner at the 51:02 mark.
  • Raphan was forced to make three saves after the break, including off a free kick that he pushed over the bar in the 74th minute.
  • Drew held the advantage in shots over the second half, 7-2.
  • Drew took the only five corner kicks awarded after halftime.
 
For The Brewers
  • Tobolski scored for the fifth time in his first six collegiate games, converting his team leading seventh goal of the season. Tobolski led the team with three shots on the day
  • Torrey tallied for the second time in 2024 and put away his first career game winning goal.
  • Mejia assisted on both Vassar goals in the game and moved into a tie for the team lead in assists with three on the year.
  • Fiske picked up his first helper of the year and moved his season point total to nine. 
  • Tobolski and Torrey accounted for Vassar's only two shots on goal.
  • Raphan turned aside a career-high seven shots on Tuesday, making four saves over the first half and three more key stops in the second frame.
  • Raphan's goals against average stands at 1.53 while making 19 saves to date on the season.
 
For The Rangers
  • Cahill converted his first goal of the season on the first half penalty kick.
  • Kevin Keirnan led all players on the day with seven shots, putting three shots on target.
  • David Hoyt suffered the loss in goal, allowing two tallies without making a save.
