Vassar Drops Senior Day Heartbreaker To #RV Montclair State

Davidson makes five saves in collegiate debut

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Men's Soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon following a hard fought 1-0 loss to visiting #RV Montclair State. Prior to Saturday's contest, Vassar recognized the seven members of its senior class: Julian Funaro (Pottstown, PA), Brandon Liu (Seattle, WA), Teddy Borgos (Queensbury, NY), Jackson Hall (Washington, DC), Danny Berry (Haskell, NJ), Charlie Rodhouse (Carmel Valley, CA) and Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA).
 
Saturday's defeat drops Vassar to 5-2 overall on the season with Montclair State improving to 4-2-1.
 
How It Happened
  • Tightly contested throughout, the two teams went into the intermission scoreless.
  • Montclair State held a 7-3 advantage in shots at the break.
  • First half corner kicks also went to the visitors, 2-0.
  • Quinn Davidson (Mamaroneck, NY) made his collegiate debut on Saturday for the Brewers and made three key saves over the opening 45 minutes.
  • The two teams remained scoreless until the late stages of the second half when the Red Hawks broke through with the only goal of the game.
  • Alfredo Rojas played a ball into the box that Salem Ellisy tucked inside the left post at 85:11 for what proved to be the game winning goal.
  • Montclair State got off seven more shots in the second frame, outshooting Vassar 7-4.
  • The Brewers best chance came off the foot of Hall in the 79th minute, an attempt from the right wing that just missed the far post.
  • Vassar took the only two corner kicks of the second half.
  • Davidson turned aside two more shots after the break for the Brewers.
 
For The Brewers
  • A late addition to the lineup, Davidson made a career best five saves in his collegiate debut.
  • Arden Tobolski (Chapel Hill, NC) led the Brewers with three shots, including Vassar's only shot on target.
  • Hall, Mauricio Mejia (Miami, FL), Eli Torrey (Philadelphia, PA) and Caden Clifton (Oviedo, FL) all finished with shots for Vassar.
 
For The Red Hawks
  • Ellisy found the back of the net for the first time in 2024 and finished the day with three shots.
  • Rojas helped on his second goal of the year and added a shot.
  • Owen Murphy produced three shots, putting two on target.
  • Rookie goalkeeper Alexander Velasquez posted the shutout victory with one save.
 
Game Statistics
  • Montclair State finished the game with a 14-7 advantage in overall shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks in the game were even at two apiece.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar opens Liberty League play on September 28 when it plays host to Union.
