Women's Volleyball Drops Two Matches at Buttermaker Tournament

Brewers head to William Paterson next weekend for a tri-match with Arcadi

Allentown, PA - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team traveled to the Buttermaker Tournament at Muhlenberg on Saturday as the Brewers fell to Stevens 21-25, 21-25, 19-25 in the first match before dropping a 18-25, 15-25, 25-21, 22-25 match against the host Mules in the nightcap. Vassar's record moves to 2-6 overall on the season.

STEVENS 3 VC 0

FIRST SET
  • The Ducks opened the set with a 5-2 lead on a kill from Liz Pederson before a kill each from sophomore Holland Kaplan, senior Julia Hale and senior Morgan Miller along with an ace from junior Ellie Kogan put Vassar ahead 7-5.
  • Stevens drew even at 11 on a Sarah Bolduc winner before the Brewers recorded three straight points and went ahead 14-11 on a Miller kill.
  • Vassar's lead increased to 20-16 after a Kaplan kill before Stevens battled back to make it 20-18 on a Pederson winner.
  • Stevens used six straight points to take the first set on two aces from Alexa Brucculeri and two kills from Bolduc.
SECOND SET
  • After Stevens earned a 11-8 lead in the beginning of the set, Vassar recorded seven straight points, led by two blocks from Hale and senior Molly Ardren, to take a 15-11.
  • The Ducks countered with five straight points, capped by three consecutive service aces from Bolduc, to take a one-point advantage.
  • A double block put Stevens ahead 19-17 before two kills from Ella Kraver and one from Ella Boland put the Ducks on set point.
  • A kill each from Kaplan and Miller cut the deficit to 24-21 until a kill from Boland clinched the second set.
THIRD SET
  • VC went ahead 5-3 after a kill from junior Rebecca Gutierrez and a block from Miller and Hale.
  • Stevens battled back to go ahead 14-9 on an ace from Brucculeri and a kill from Boland.
  • A kill from Ardren and a solo block from Gutierrez trimmed the lead to 17-15.
  • Five straight points from the Ducks extended the lead to 23-16 on two aces from Bailey Axelrad and a kill from Vivian Lisboa.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Kaplan finished with 10 kills, five digs and three aces while Miller added five kills and eight digs.
  • Gutierrez tallied four winners along with Hale recording four kills and four blocks.
  • Ardren registered three kills, 12 assists and two blocks and senior Hailey Hayes added nine assists and eight digs.
  • Junior Ellie Kogan lifted a team-high 13 digs for the Brewers.
FOR THE DUCKS
  • Bolduc buried a match-high 12 kills, five aces and eight digs while Kraver registered 10 kills.
  • Lisboa recorded six kills and three blocks along with Boland tallying five winners.
  • Gabbi Roberts finished with 15 assists and six digs while Brucculeri handed out a match-high 18 assists and added three aces.
  • Liz Patterson lifted a match-high 13 digs for Stevens.

MUHLENBERG 3 VC 1 

FIRST SET
  • Muhlenberg raced out to a 7-1 lead on a kill from Olivia Bruno before Vassar trimmed the lead to 9-6 on a kill from senior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield.
  • The Mules lead grew to 17-9 following a kill from Christina Marcin as the Brewers clawed back to within 20-15 on a kill from Kaplan.
  • Muhlenberg clinched the set on a winner from Marcin and Abigail Oswari.
SECOND SET
  • The Mules opened the second set with an early 10-4 lead following two aces and a kill from Esmae Oehler.
  • The lead expanded to 18-5 as Bruno tallied three kills along with an ace from Kelly Stephen.
  • Vassar cut the lead to 20-12 after back-to-back winners from Hale.
  • Mancin's service ace took the second set for Muhlenberg.
THIRD SET
  • Vassar responded with a 7-3 lead to open the third as Miller, Gutierrez, Kaplan and Hale each buried winners.
  • The lead expanded to 11-5 following a kill each from Gutierrez and Kaplan.
  • The Mules trimmed the lead to 13-10 on a winner from Brooke Shiver before VC answered with two aces and a kill from Kaplan to expand the lead to 16-10.
  • Mancin's service ace helped the Mules cut the lead down to 19-17 until Vassar built the lead back to 24-18 after a kill from Kaplan and Hale.
  • Vassar took the set following a Muhlenberg service error.
FOURTH SET
  • The Brewers raced out to a 6-2 lead on two kills from Miller and an ace from Kaplan before Muhlenberg evened the set at six on a kill from Rachel Jacobs.
  • Vassar built out a 13-8 advantage on two blocks from Hale and Anthony-Brumfield until the Mules regained the lead at 14-13 on six straight points.
  • After VC went ahead 17-15, Muhlenberg recorded six straight points, led by kills from three different players to go ahead 21-17.
  • A block from Miller and Hale followed by consecutive aces from Kogan trimmed the lead to one before Muhlenberg used a block and a kill from Shiver to take the match.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Kaplan recorded 10 kills, 10 digs and three aces while Hale finished with nine winners and six blocks (two solo).
  • Gutierrez recorded eight kills along with Miller adding five kills, two blocks and 10 digs.
  • Ardren registered three kills, a match-high 17 assists and three blocks while Hayes added six assists and nine digs.
  • Sophomore T Petro and Kogan each lifted a team-high 11 digs.
FOR THE MULES
  • Marcin led the way with 11 kills, three aces and nine digs while Oehler tallied nine kills, two aces and 13 digs.
  • Jacobs recorded nine kills and four blocks along with nine winners and two blocks from Bruno.
  • Shiver tallied six winners and five blocks while Jenny Ryan handed out 28 assists and nine digs.
  • Chloe Gaglione lifted a match-high 17 digs.

  • Vassar heads to William Paterson for a tri-match on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
