Brewers Score Second Win To Open Season

Fiske tallies twice in victory

Poughkeepsie, NY – Junior Jared Fiske (Livingston, NJ) scored twice and First Year Arden Tobolski (Chapel Hill, NC) registered a goal and an assist as the Vassar College Men's Soccer team won for the second straight time to begin the season with a 4-2 home victory over Springfield Sunday afternoon.
 
Vassar improves to 2-0 on the season and begins a season with two straight victories for the first time since 2019. Springfield slips to 0-1-1 in the early going of the 2024 season.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead with just over 16 minutes left before halftime.
  • Fiske opened the scoring in the sixth minute when he potted his second goal of the season, finishing off a feed from Eli Torrey (Philadelphia, PA) at the 5:12 mark of the tilt.
  • The Brewers doubled their lead in the 15th minute when First Year Jack Staples buried his first career goal at 14:37.
  • Fiske struck with his second goal of the game and eventual game winning tally in the 29th minute after he was on the end of Mauricio Mejia's (Miami, FL) first career assist at 28:24.
  • Trailing by three goals in the lates stages of the opening stanza, Springfield struck twice in the final 12 minutes to pull to within a goal at the intermission.
  • Aidan Hallinan got the Pride on the board in the 33rd minute with his first goal of the season.
  • Just under 10 minutes later Brandon Trent tipped in a restart from Connor Policarpio at the 42:49 mark.
  • The Brewers doubled up Springfield in shots before halftime, 6-3, and led in corner kicks 3-0 at the break.
  • After the first 45 minutes featured five goals, the two teams went without a marker until the 88th minute when Vassar spread its lead back to two goals.
  • Brandon Liu (Seattle, WA) played ball from the defensive side of midfield and found the foot of Tobolski who potted his team leading fourth goal of the season at the 87:43 mark of the game.
  • Vassar held Springfield to just two shots after halftime, leading in attempts 8-2 after the break.
  • The Brewers dominated corner kicks in the second half, 9-0.
 
For The Brewers
  • Fiske scored his second game winning goal in as many outings to start the season and stands second on the team with three goals following Sunday's two-goal effort.
  • Tobokski pushed his team lead in goals to four and points to nine following a three-point afternoon.
  • Staples became the fourth different player to score a goal on the season with his first career tally.
  • Torrey took over second place on the team with his second helper of the campaign.
  • Mejia picked up the first point of his career with an assist on the game winning goal.
  • Liu recorded the third assist of his career on the Brewers' fourth goal.
  • Jacob Raphan (Oceanside, NY) picked up the win in goal, turning aside one shot in the victory.
 
For The Pride
  • Hallinan and Trent each scored their first goals of the season.
  • Connor Policarpio assisted on Springfield's second goal and rounded out the day with a shot on goal.
  • Noah Pote suffered the loss in goal for the Pride, making three saves on the afternoon.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar held a 14-5 advantage in shots on Sunday, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Brewers 12-0.
  • Fouls on the day went against Springfield 11-9.
