Erin McCusker (Norton, MA) closed out a standout sophomore season Saturday with a hard fought loss to Tufts' Zoe Kava at the 2024 NCAA Division III Singles Championship at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, MO.
After falling behind 1-0, McCusker broke Kava in the first set to even the score at 1-1. Going back on serve, McCusker expanded the lead to 2-1, before breaking Kava a second time to open a 3-1 lead in the first frame. On serve again, McCusker spread the lead to 4-1.
Kava responded by taking the next game before McCusker came back to push the score to 5-2. Kava answered back to win the next five games to grab a 1-0 lead with a 7-5 first set victory.
McCusker came out in the second set and grabbed a 1-0 lead and broke Kava once again to even the second set score at 2-2. Kava went on to close out the match with wins in the final four games to score a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
McCusker, the 2024 Liberty League Player of the Year, closes the season with a 23-8 overall record in singles play.
