Baseball Pulls Off Split Against Skidmore With Extra Innings Victory

Murray's single knocks in game-winning run in the top of the 11th

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team salvaged a split in a league doubleheader as the Brewers fell 14-5 in game one against Skidmore followed by a 11 inning 10-9 victory in the second game of the doubleheader. The Brewers improve to 5-15 overall and 3-6 in Liberty League play while Skidmore moves to 12-9 on the season and 5-1 in conference action.

Game One - Skidmore 14 Vassar 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vassar jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as junior Daniel Laderman singled in sophomore Jensen Bergman before junior Michael Lee plated senior Reid Lapekas with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first.
  • Skidmore put up five runs in the third following a bases loaded walk from Trey Bourque, a RBI single from Zachary Leiderman and a two-RBI single from Owen Roy.
  • The Thoroughbreds expanded the lead to 7-2 after Bourque scored on a throwing error and Leiderman plated another run on a single.
  • Vassar cut the lead to two in the sixth following a RBI single from M. Lee, a sacrifice fly from sophomore Taison Jemison and a RBI single from junior Ricardo Reyna.
  • Sam Kornet's RBI double scored two runs in the sixth followed by the Thoroughbreds tacking on five runs in the eighth.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Laderman recorded a 3-for-5 day with a RBI and a run scored while senior Jack Silvera added two hits and a run batted in.
  • Bergman, Lee and junior Birch Herring-Jackson each tallied two hits along with Reyna adding a hit and a RBI.
  • Junior Pat Kerrigan took the loss as he went four innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs (three earned), three walks and struck out three.
FOR THE THOROUGHBREDS
  • Roy finished 3-for-4 with three runs batted in along with Leiderman going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
  • Bourque reached base four times and knocked in three runs while Kornet added a hit and three RBI.
  • Shaw Pedemonti and Jaden Torrado each recorded two hits.
  • Chase Siegel earned the win as he tossed 5.1 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs and struck out two.
  • Ethan Caiazza picked up the save as he threw the final 3.2 innings of relief and gave up four hits, no runs, one walk and struck out four.

Game Two - Skidmore 9 Vassar 9 (10 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thoroughbreds cracked the scoreboard first as Leiderman doubled home two runs in the first inning.
  • Vassar took a 4-2 lead in the second inning as M. Lee pushed a run across on a safety squeeze bunt, Reyna doubled down the right field line to score two and Reyna scored on a Skidmore error.
  • Skidmore scratched out a run in the second with a sacrifice fly from Torrado before Vassar answered with a RBI single from junior Marc Milano in the top of the third.
  • The Thoroughbreds regained the lead in the third as Ewen Donald singled home Leiderman followed by a RBI groundout from Holden Caney and a Nate Vandersea RBI single put Skidmore ahead 6-5.
  • Lapekas singled home Reyna in the fourth to make it 6-6 before Skidmore answered with three runs in the fourth with a two-RBI single from Eddie Galvao and a bases loaded walk from Vandersea.
  • Vassar took advantage of a Skidmore error and a balk to cut the lead to 9-8 and a Lapekas RBI single tied the game at nine after six innings.
  • The game was sent to extra innings where senior Ty Murray singled through the middle with two outs to score Silvera to take home a 10-9 victory in 11 innings.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Reyna finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored while Lapekas tallied two hits and two runs batted in.
  • M. Lee recorded three hits, Silvera collected two hits along with Milano knocking in two runs.
  • Sophomore Addison Lee started on the mound as he went 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits, nine runs (seven earned), four walks and struck out five.
  • First year Will Darrell earned his second victory of the season as he went a career-high 6.2 innings, allowing just two hits, four walks and struck out six.
  • Junior Luke Barrientos tallied his first save of the game with a scoreless 11th inning and has allowed two walks and struck out one.
FOR THE THOROUGHBREDS
  • Leiderman recorded two hits and two RBI along with Pedemonti tallying two hits and two runs scored.
  • Vandersea added two hits and two runs scored while Galvao knocked in two runs.
  • Ethan Barnett started on the mound for Skidmore as he went four innings, allowing eight hits and six runs (four earned).
  • Sam Dalsimer took the loss as he tossed two innings, giving up one hit, one run, two walks and struck out two.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar will play host to NYU on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Prentiss Field.
  • Skidmore heads to Williams for a non-league matchup on Tuesday.
