Baseball Outslugs NYU, 11-7

M. Lee finishes 4-for-5 for the Brewers

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team earned a 11-7 non-conference victory over New York University on Wednesday afternoon at Prentiss Field. The Brewers improve to 6-15 overall while the Violets fall to 16-9 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • NYU got on the board in the top of the first as Harrison Blueweiss doubled down the left field line and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Cam Dunn.
  • Vassar answered with a run of its own after junior Birch Herring-Jackson and senior Reid Lapekas both singled and sophomore Jensen Bergman drew a walk. Herring-Jackson scored on a groundball double play to even the score after one.
  • The Violets added two runs in the second as Blueweiss knocked in Connor Roggero with a sacrifice fly and Nick Argenziano singled home Troy Oliveira with two outs.
  • Vassar countered with three runs in the third as senior Jack Silvera and junior Daniel Laderman delivered back-to-back doubles followed by a RBI single from junior Michael Lee. Senior Ty Murray knocked in the third run of the inning with a RBI groundout.
  • NYU cut the lead to 7-6 in the fifth as Alex VanLandingham doubled home two runs along with a sacrifice fly from Dakota Barbet to cut the lead to one.
  • Vassar scratched out a run in the bottom of the fifth as Silvera laid down a safety squeeze bunt to score Bergman.
  • The Brewers tacked on three runs in the sixth with Herring-Jackson and Bergman each drawing bases loaded walks and Lapekas knocked in junior Ricardo Reyna with a sacrifice fly to make it 11-6.
  • The Violets registered a run in the eighth following a RBI single from Cam Dunn but sophomore Cade Terada-Herzer limited the threat as Vassar earned the eight inning victory due to darkness.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • M. Lee finished 4-for-5 with a RBI and three runs scored while Bergman reached base four times and drove in three runs.
  • Herring-Jackson and junior Marc Milano each recorded two its on the day with Lapekas, Silvera, Laderman and Silvera each adding a hit and a run batted in.
  • Senior Kyle Flynn started on the mound as he tossed two innings, allowing six hits and three runs.
  • Junior Collin Donnelly earned the victory as he went 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and struck out two.
  • Senior Jack Blau tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and first year Asher Millimet threw a scoreless relief inning.
FOR THE VIOLETS
  • N. Argenziano recorded a 3-for-5 day with a RBI along with Dunn adding two hits and two runs batted in.
  • VanLandingham tallied two RBI while Blueweiss registered two hits and two runs scored and Nate Pallotta added two hits.
  • Joe Cetale took the loss as he threw two innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs and walked one.
  • Tyler Tedeschi tossed two scoreless relief innings, allowing two hits, three walks and struck out one.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar heads north to take on Ithaca on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader.
  • NYU travels to Brandeis for a four-game conference set beginning on Friday.
