Baseball Secures Senior Day Sweep Over Utica

Vassar is now winners of six of their last seven, play the Pioneers in game three tomorrow

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team celebrated Senior Day with two victories over Utica University on Saturday as the Brewers earned a 5-4 win in eight innings of game one before completing the sweep of the Pioneers with a 8-2 triumph in game two. Vassar has won six of its last seven games and improves its record to 10-16 overall while Utica falls to 9-20 on the season.

Game One - Vassar 5 Utica 4 (8 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Utica scratched out a run in the first as John Longeretta drove in Josh Duval with a RBI single through the left side.
  • Vassar evened the scoring in the bottom of the second as junior Birch Herring-Jackson singled home junior Marc Milano, who reached on a walk, to tie the scoring at one.
  • The Brewers took their first lead of the game in the fourth when junior Daniel Laderman doubled with one out and was plated on the second RBI single from Herring-Jackson.
  • The Pioneers answered with three runs in the fifth as Jacob Scalise scored on a wild pitch followed by a two-RBI single from Joe Crossley to go ahead 4-2.
  • Vassar responded in the sixth as Herring-Jackson beat out an infield single and sophomore Jensen Bergman drew a walk followed by both runners scoring on consecutive wild pitches.
  • The game went on to extra innings with Utica threatening in the top of the eighth as Andrew Salbinski drew a walk followed by a double from Dom Fasolo with one out. Junior Luke Barrientos entered in relief for Vassar and struck out the final two hitters of the inning to keep the game tied.
  • Junior Bradley Markind singled to right to lead off the eighth and advanced to second on a balk before Herring-Jackson was intentionally walked. Bergman then laid down a bunt single while Markind came around to score on a throwing error to walk it off in the eighth.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Herring-Jackson finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Bergman had a hit, two walks and a run scored.
  • Laderman finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and Markind and senior Jack Silvera each had a hit.
  • Senior Michael Came took a no-decision as he went the first four innings, allowing five hits, one run, two walks and struck out one.
  • Barrientos earned his third victory of the season as he tossed the final 0.2 innings and struck out both hitters.
FOR THE PIONEERS
  • Jason Story and Longeretta each tallied two hits while Crossley knocked in two runs. 
  • Duval, Fasolo and Antonio Martinez each added a hit.
  • Austin Rhodes started for Utica and threw 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, four runs, five walks and struck out four.
  • Nick Greene took the loss in relief as he tossed 1.2 innings, giving up two hits, one unearned run and two walks.

Game Two - Vassar 8 Utica 2 (7 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Brewers got on the board first in the second as senior Ty Murray walked, advanced to second on a single from Markind, stole third and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • Vassar doubled its lead in the third as senior Reid Lapekas doubled to lead off the inning and was plated on a RBI single from Milano.
  • Utica tied the game at two in the fourth on a two-out two-RBI single from Micah Fiorello.
  • Vassar put together a four-run inning in the bottom half of the fourth as Lapekas was hit by a pitch and Silvera drew a walk with two outs. Milano knocked in both runners with a double down the right field line followed by RBI singles from Murray and Laderman to make it 6-2.
  • The Brewers added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings as Lapekas doubled in Bergman in the fifth and Murray blasted an opposite field homer in the sixth to make it 8-2.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Murray finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Lapekas went 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs scored and a run batted in.
  • Milano tallied two hits and three runs driven in along with Marking reaching base three times.
  • Junior Pat Kerrigan earned his second victory of the season as he tossed four innings, allowing four hits, two runs, two walks and struck out five.
  • First year Rohan Mishra picked up his first save of the year as he went the final three innings, giving up just one hit and struck out two.
FOR THE PIONEERS
  • Fiorello finished with two hits and two runs batted in while Crossley had a hit and a run scored.
  • Steve Sclafini and Jack Scanlon each added a hit.
  • Aidan McCue started for Utica as he went three innings, allowing five hits, two runs, four walks and struck out one.
  • Peyton Newton took the loss in relief as he lasted 0.2 innings, giving up three hits, four hits and two walks.
UP NEXT
  • The two teams will square off in the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
