Women’s Lacrosse Suffers Senior Day Loss To Union

Brewers honor six seniors prior to Saturday’s contest

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team played its final regular season home game Saturday afternoon, suffering a 16-8 Liberty League loss to visiting Union. Prior to the contest, Vassar honored the six seniors on the 2024 roster: Livia Shine (Montville, NJ), Lola Wright (Palisades, NY), Emma Larson (Ramsey, NJ), Natalie Daigle (Warwick, NY), Riley Kelly (Syosset, NY) and Lauren Johns (Havertown, PA).
 
Saturday's loss stops a two-game run for the Brewers and drops them to 3-9 overall on the season and 2-5 in conference competition. Union improves to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in Liberty League play.
 
How It Happened
  • Union opened the scoring with two goals over the opening 2:33 of the contest before Shine potted her first goal of the season at the 11:46 mark of the opening period to bring the Brewers to within 2-1.
  • Following the Shine goal, Union scored the final three goals of the first quarter and the first two goals of the second frame to open a 7-1 lead on a Maddie Doyle tally at the 12:16 mark of the second quarter.
  • First Year Siena Wong (Scotts Valley, CA) halted the Union run with her eighth goal of the year, finishing off a feed from Maeve Faigel (North Andover, MA) with 7:41 left before halftime.
  • Union answered with three goals over the final 1:49 of the first half, including an Anna Smith marker with eight seconds left before the break that sent the Garnet Chargers into the intermission with a 10-2 advantage.
  • Union finished the first half with an 18-8 edge in overall shots and a 14-8 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Garnet Chargers held a slim 7-6 edge in draw controls before the break with groundballs going to Union in the first half, 12-3.  
  • Coming out of halftime, Union built its lead to nine goals twice in the third frame.
  • Tess Billings (Deerfield, IL) accounted for the lone Vassar goal in the third frame, scoring for the 19th time on the season with 2:21 left in third quarter.
  • Each team scored five times in the final stanza with Emilia DiLiberto (Allison Park, PA) potting four goals for the Brewers over the last 15 minutes.
  • Billings scored her second goal of the game with 3:36 left before Union closed out the scoring in with two goals in the last 1:44.
 
For The Brewers
  • DiLiberto pushed her season goal total to 18, moving into second on the team in the category. In addition to her four goals, DiLiberto added a caused turnover and six draw controls.
  • Billings moved her team-high in goals to 20 with a pair of scores on Saturday, closing a four-point day with two assists. Billings rounded out a strong all-around game with a caused turnover and six draw controls.
  • Shine and Wong each scored for the Brewers.
  • Julia Lawless (Valley Stream, NY) led the team with two groundballs and added a forced turnover.
  • Catherine Peacock (Stockton, NJ) finished the day with a draw and a caused turnover.
  • Johns closed the game with seven saves in nearly 43 minutes of action.
  • Bree MacMullen (Medford, NJ) made four saves in just under 18 minutes of work.
 
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Doyle led the scoring attack for Union with four goals.
  • Dana Nelson scored three times and caused a pair of turnovers.
  • Greta Maurer scored twice and assisted on a third goal to go along with four groundballs and three draw controls.
  • Anna Smith scored once and assisted on two goals.
  • Ella Trout caused a game-high four turnovers and picked up two groundballs.
  • Sydney Widlitz earned the win in goal with eight saves.
 
Game Statistics
  • Union outshot Vassar 34-19 overall and 27-16 in shots on goal.
  • The Garnet Chargers finished with a slim 14-13 edge in draw controls.
  • Union doubled up Vassar in groundballs, 18-9.
