Hess’ Late Tally Sends Vassar Past Stockton

Hess scores in closing seconds

Poughkeepsie, NY – Senior Solomon Hess (Brewster, NY) scored with four seconds left in regulation time and junior Drew Quinn (Garden City, NY) made 10 saves in goal and tallied for the Brewers in a tight 13-12 non-conference win over Stockton on Wednesday. Sophomore Baker Morton (West Hartford, VT) led the Brewers with four points in the victory.
 
Wednesday's win pushes Vassar to 8-4 overall on the season, while Stockton slips to 9-5.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar raced out to a 2-0 lead after Nate Johnson (Brentwood, TN) and Dan Negron (Mahwah, NJ) scored 27 seconds apart early in the first period.
  • After Connor Albrecht got Stockton on the board at the 11:53 mark of the opening quarter, Quinn scored his first career goal at the 8:51 mark to give Vassar a 3-1 lead.
  • Morton pushed the lead to 4-1 before Stockton potted two goals late in the opening stanza to make the score 4-3 after 15 minutes of play.
  • In a low scoring second quarter, Vassar scored two of the three goals to head into the intermission leading 6-4.
  • Troy Santise (Washington Township, NJ) and Ian Zumpano (Townson, MD) scored back-to-back goals in the middle stages of the second period to help build the Brewers' advantage.
  • Vassar held a 25-17 advantage in shots in the first halftime.
  • The Brewers won eight of the 12 first half face-offs and held a 20-10 edge in groundballs at the break.
  • Stockton came out of the break with four of the five goals in the third quarter to grab its first lead of the game on a Shane Phillips goal that made the score 8-7.
  • Gavin Arcuri (Westhampton, NY) brought the Brewers back even at 8-8 with a goal at the 12:43 mark of the final stanza.
  • The Arcuri goal started a three-goal run for Vassar that featured goals from Dylan McFarland (Hickory, NC) and Johnson that moved the Brewers back in front 10-8.
  • Stockton rallied again with the next three goals, including two from Reegan Capozzoli, to retake an 11-10 lead with 5:31 left to play.
  • Vassar pushed back in front with back-to-back goals from Santise and Arcuri 70 seconds apart to grab a 12-11 lead with 2:27 left in the tilt.
  • Stockton got the game even with 2:05 left on a Colin Hopkins marker.
  • Following a Stockton turnover in the final minute, Hess collected a groundball and scored with just four seconds left to mark the final lead change of the contest.
  • Stockton got a shot off in the closing seconds, but was unable to put the attempt on target.
 
For The Brewers
  • Morton led the Brewers with four points, scoring once and assisting on three goals.
  • Santise netted a hat trick and collected two groundballs.
  • Arcuri and Johnson each scored twice for the Brewers.
  • Zumpano and Hess both finished with a goal and an assist, with Hess potting the game winner.

  • Dan Bader (Forestdale, MA) led the team with three caused turnovers to go along with two groundballs.
  • Jack Palmer (Atlanta, GA) collected five groundballs for the Brewers.
  • Eli Sherman (San Francisco, CA) won 18 face-offs, equaling a season-high in wins, and led the team with eight groundballs.
  • Quinn earned the win in goal with 10 saves to go along with a goal, three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

  • Capozzoli led the Stockton scoring attack with three goals and four points.
  • Hopkins and Albrecht each scored twice for the Ospreys.
  • Brendan McHale finished the contest with a pair of assists.
  • Brendan McSoley caused five turnovers and collected three groundballs.
  • Tyler Horvath won 10 face-offs and scooped four groundballs.
  • Ben Blum suffered the loss in goal with 12 stops.
