Vassar Drops Overtime Heartbreaker At Lebanon Valley

Mulcahy, Torkelson net hat tricks

Annville, PA – The Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team returned to game action following a 10-day layoff and suffered a hard fought 13-12 overtime loss at Lebanon Valley Saturday afternoon. Reilly Mulcahy (Arlington, VA) and Emma Torkelson (Madison, NJ) each scored a hat trick for the Brewers.
 
The Brewers fall to 1-2 overall on the season with Saturday's result, while the Flying Dutchmen improve to 2-3 overall.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar jumped in front 2-1 in the early going on Saturday after back-to-back goals from Torkelson and First Year Sigrid Fredlund (Seattle, WA) just over 30 seconds apart just under five minutes into the tilt.
  • After gaining the lead, Vassar saw Lebanon Valley score the next two goals to push back in front 3-2 with 4:29 left in the first quarter.
  • First Year Emilia DiLiberto (Allison Park, PA) brought the Brewers back even at 3-3 with an unassisted goal at the 3:01 mark of the opening frame.
  • Lebanon Valley responded with the final three goals of the first quarter over the final 2:21 of the period to surge in front 6-3 after 15 minutes of play.
  • Vassar scored the first two goals of the second period, with Mulcahy and Torkelson supplying the scoring, to get back to within a single shot with 7:52 left before halftime.
  • The Dutchmen answered back with the final two goals of the half, including an Elizabeth Morgan tally with 3:11 left, to carry an 8-5 lead into the intermission.
  • Lebanon Valley finished the first half with a 17-12 advantage in shots.
  • The Dutchmen closed the opening 30 minutes with a 11-4 edge in draw controls.
  • Coming out of the break, the two sides alternated goals until consecutive tallies from Tess Billings and Mulcahy pulled the Brewers to within 11-9 with 15 minutes left to play.
  • The Brewers went on to move their scoring run to five goals with the first three tallies of the fourth quarter to grab their first lead since 2-1.
  • Fredlund knotted the score at 11-11 with 7:14 left before Torkelson gave Vassar a 12-11 advantage with 4:44 remaining in regulation time.
  • The one-goal advantage held for two-and-a-half minutes until Molly Whisler scored a player-up goal for Lebanon Valley to even the score at 12-12 and eventually force the extra stanza.
  • The Dutchmen would win the draw control to open the overtime period and would not relinquish possession.
  • Anna Lougee found the game winner on an unassisted goal just over a minute-and-a-half into the period.
 
For The Brewers
  • Mulcahy led the scoring attack with four points, scoring three times and assisting on another goal.
  • Torkelson potted three goals for the Brewers.
  • DiLiberto closed a strong afternoon with two goals, an assist and a team-high seven draw controls.
  • Fredlund totaled three points on the strength of two goals and an assist to go along with a pair of draw controls.
  • Lola Wright (Palisades, NY) posted a goal and an assist.
  • Lauren Johns (Havertown, PA) suffered the loss in goal, making 10 saves and leading the team with two groundballs.
 
For The Dutchmen
  • Emily Beard led all players with six points, scoring three times and assisting on three more goals. Beard matched the game-high with seven draw controls.
  • Morgan scored a hat trick for Lebanon Valley.
  • Whisler finished with a pair of goals and an assist.
  • Lougee finished with two goals, including the game winner, and added a groundball.
  • Alyssa Wene scored a goal and led the team with three groundballs.
  • Jamie Handwerger earned the win in goal with eight stops.

  • Lebanon Valley finished the day with a slim 29-24 advantage in shots.
  • The Dutchmen held a 17-11 edge in draw controls.
