Baseball Drops Twinbill at George Fox

Brewers conclude three game set with the Bruins tomorrow afternoon

NEWBERG, OR - The Vassar College Baseball team opened its trip to the Pacific Northwest on Friday as the Brewers fell 3-2 in 10 innings in game one before dropping a 13-2 decision in seven innings in the nightcap. The Brewers fall to 1-3 overall while the Bruins improve to 8-5 on the season.

Game 1 - GFU 3 VC 2 (10 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel as the Bruins scratched out a run in the bottom of the third as Ty Davis led off with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jared Miller. Mason Eastman lifted a flyball that scored Davis on a fielding error to make it 1-0.
  • In the fourth, Bleu Ellis singled to right and then proceeded to steal second and advanced to third on a sac bunt from Shane McClendon. Senior left hander Michael Came induced an infield pop out and a line out to right to keep the lead at one.
  • Vassar evened the score at one in the top of the fifth as senior Nick Greenhawt drew a leadoff walk and the Brewers loaded the bases after back-to-back singles from juniors Ricardo Reyna and Birch Herring-Jackson. Sophomore Jensen Bergman drew a bases loaded walk with one out to tie the game at one.
  • The Bruins had first and third with one out in the sixth after singles from Jonathan Stone and Ellis but first year left hander Rohan Mishra got an infield pop up and a strikeout to hold Geroge Fox off the board.
  • The game was pushed into extra innings as Vassar struck for a run in the 10th with Reyna leading off the inning with an opposite field double. Herring-Jackson moved Reyna to third on a groundout and senior Reid Lapekas lined a two-out double to right field to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead.
  • The Bruins answered in the bottom half of the inning as Eastman drew a leadoff walk and was moved to second on a sac bunt from Evan Balingit. Jeremy Sangalang was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Carson Coulter knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly to tie it at two all and Stone walked it off with an infield single to score Sangalang.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Lapekas finished with two hits and a RBI along with Reyna adding two hits and a run scored.
  • Senior Jack Silvera, Greenhawt, junior Marc Milano and Herring-Jackson each recorded a hit.
  • Came went five innings on the mound, allowing five hits, one run, two walks and struck out two.
  • Mishra and junior Collin Donnelly each added an inning of scoreless relief and struck out one.
  • Junior Luke Barrientos took the loss as he tossed 2.2 innings of relief and gave up one hit, two runs, one walk and struck out three.
FOR THE BRUINS
  • Sangalang, Stone and Ellis each recorded two hits while Coulter and Stone each drove in a run.
  • Eastman, Sangalang and Davis each had a run scored.
  • Caleb Debban started for George Fox as he went six innings, allowing three hits, one run, two walks and struck out eight.
  • Michael Singleton earned the win, going four innings in relief and giving up five hits, one run and striking out four.

Game 2 - GFU 13 VC 2 (7 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Brewers got on the board first in the top of the first inning as Bergman reached on an error followed by Lapekas moving Bergman to third on a single to left field. Bergman later scored on an error to give VC an early lead.
  • George Fox evened the score in the bottom of the third as Davis was hit by a pitch and Miller singled with one out. Both runners moved up a base following a balk before Eastman's sacrifice fly pushed the Bruins first run across.
  • The Bruins took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Sangalang led off with a solo home run along with Ellis' safety squeeze bunt that knocked in Isaac Snyder to make it 3-1 after four innings.
  • George Fox added a run in the fifth as Miller scored following an error before the Bruins put up five runs in the sixth when Sangalang and Snyder each doubled home two runs along with a RBI double from Davis.
  • Vassar put up a run in the seventh as first year Noah Stockman collected his first collegiate hit with a RBI double to plate Reyna.
  • George Fox put up four runs to earn the run rule victory as Balingit's three-run homer walked it off in seven innings.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Lapekas and Reyna each tallied two hits in the second game of the doubleheader while Stockman knocked in a run.
  • Junior Pat Kerrigan took the loss on the mound as he went four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and struck out four.
FOR THE BRUINS
  • Balingit and Sangalang each tallied two hits and three RBI while Snyder recorded two hits and two RBI.
  • Miller and Davis each had three runs scored while Eastman knocked in two runs.
  • Aidan Rady earned the win as he tossed five innings, giving up six hits, one run (zero earned) and struck out four.
  • Stone tossed two innings in relief and gave up one run while striking out two.

  • The two teams will conclude the three game series tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. (Pacific)
