Men’s Tennis Battles Past #40 Occidental

Brewers beat Tigers for first time since 2011

Los Angeles, CA – The #-T33 Vassar College Men's Tennis team outlasted #40 Occidental on Tuesday by a score of 5-4. First Year Henry Zhang (Zhengzhou, China) at sixth singles and Nolan Kubiak (Neenah, WI) at fifth singles battled in victories that clinched the win for the Brewers.
 
Tuesday's win pushes Vassar to 3-1 overall on the season and gave the Brewers their first win over Occidental since a 7-2 triumph on March 7, 2011.
 
Doubles
  • Vassar got off to a strong start in the tightly contested match, winning two of the three doubles decisions against the Tigers.
  • The top pair of Kubiak and Ethan Mantell (Hermosa Beach, CA) held off Occidental's Ace Andres and Mason Hart in a hard fought 8-7 (8-6) victory.
  • At second doubles Fernando Bauermeister (Winter Park, FL) and Zhang cruised to a 7-0 tie breaker victory to score a tight 8-7 win fort the Brewers.
 
Singles
  • First Year Eugene Lee (Chico, CA) put the Brewers in front 3-2 after earning a 6-4, 6-4 third singles victory, improving to 3-1 on the season, including a perfect 2-0 at the third position.
  • After Occidental moved in front 4-3 following wins at the second and third slots, Zhang and Kubiak battled to even the match and clinch the victory.
  • At sixth singles, Zhang fought off three match points from the Tigers' Dennis Isak. Zhang improved to 2-1 on the season and evened the contest at 4-4 with a 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 win for the Brewers.
  • Kubiak eventually clinched the win for the Brewers at fifth singles, outlasting Occidental's Benjamin Burrows 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to improve to 2-0 on the season and give Vassar its second straight victory.
 
What's Next
  • The Brewers will look for their third straight victory on Wednesday when they take on #18 CalTech in Pasadena, CA.
