#9 Men's Volleyball Earns Victories Over #17 Misericordia, Arcadia

Brewers will clash with #3 Stevens next Saturday

GLENSIDE, PA - The #9 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team hit the road for the third straight weekend on Saturday as the Brewers earned two victories with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 sweep over #17 Misericordia followed by a 25-15, 22-25, 25-12, 25-19 win against Arcadia in the nightcap. The Brewers improve to 19-5 overall on the season after the two victories and have now won three consecutive matches.

FIRST SET
  • Vassar opened the set with a 5-2 lead as seniors Jacob Kim and Colin Jones each notched a kill along with aces from senior AJ Erickson and junior Payne Lounsbery.
  • The Brewers lead grew to 9-4 following winners from juniors Billy Fan and Gavin Akoto and a service ace from Kim before the Cougars cut the lead to two on back-to-back kills from Anthony DePalma at 10-8.
  • Misericordia got within one at 14-13 before Vassar scored five of the next six points, led by a kill and ace from Kim along with a block from senior Vaughn Ramsey and Akoto, to extend the lead to 19-14.
  • Three kills from Jared Piontkowski trimmed the advantage to 22-19 until winners from Kim and Jones followed by a set-clinching block from Fan and Akoto to earn a 25-20 set victory.
SECOND SET
  • The Brewers gained a 7-4 advantage in the second set as Ramsey landed two kills along with winners from Fan, Jones and Lounsbery.
  • Misericordia drew even at 11 after kills from Zane Martin, DePalma and Piontkowski before Vassar scored four of the next five points, capped by kills from Ramsey and Kim to force a timeout.
  • The Cougars responded with winners from DePalma, Piontkowski and Benjamin Clendening to trim the lead to 19-18 until Vassar answered with a kill from Fan and a block from Ramsey and Akoto to push the lead to 21-18.
  • DePalma's winner reduced the lead back to one at 24-23 before a block from Kim and Jones sealed the second set victory for the Brewers.
THIRD SET
  • Kim buried two kills to open the set along with a winner from Jones and an ace from Lounsbery to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Piontkowski's winner got the Cougars within two at 10-8 until the Brewers answered with kills from Fan and Kim and an ace from Lounsbery to push the lead to 13-8.
  • Senior Andrew Guaragno's kill extended the lead to 18-13 before Misericordia reduced the advantage to 20-16 on a Piontkowski kill.
  • A solo block from Akoto and a winner from Fan took the sweep for Vassar at 25-18.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Kim led the way with 11 kills, two aces, six assists and a block while Jones buried eight winners and added a block.
  • Ramsey finished with seven kills and two blocks along with Fan adding six kills and four digs.
  • Lounsbery recorded five winners and three aces and Akoto chipped in two kills and four blocks.
  • Erickson handed out a team-high 24 assists while first year Tucker Shearn lifted a match-high eight digs.
FOR THE COUGARS
  • Piontkowski and DePalma each recorded a match-high 17 kills while Piontkowski added three digs and DePalma had four digs.
  • Martin added five kills along with Jackson Fehnel tallied four winners.
  • Gannon DeFrain handed out a match-high 39 assists and four digs while Alex Furlong registered a team-best seven digs.

VC 3 ARC 1

FIRST SET
  • Vassar raced out to a quick 8-3 lead as Jones buried two kills along with winners from Ramsey, Kim, Lounsbery and first year Armaan Desai.
  • The Brewers advantage grew to 14-6 following two straight kills from Desai followed by a winner from Fan to expand the lead to 16-8.
  • Fan's ace pushed the lead to 21-11 before a kill from Ryan Miller and a block from Josh Clendening trimmed the lead to 24-15.
  • Desai's sixth kill of the opening set took the first set for the Brewers 25-15.
SECOND SET
  • Vassar earned a 6-2 lead to begin the set as Guaragno and Kim each buried a winner.
  • Arcadia cut the lead to 9-6 on a block from Terrell Turner and Riley Kodidek before Desai's kill brought the lead up to five.
  • The Knights tied the set at 16 all following a kill from Danny Gonzalez and an ace from Clendening to force a Vassar timeout.
  • Arcadia earned a 21-18 lead after a solo block from Gonzalez and the Knights took the set following a VC service error.
THIRD SET
  • Vassar scored the first seven points of the set as Desai recorded a solo block along with a kill from Kim and an ace from Erickson.
  • The lead grew to double digits following an ace from first year Parker Schoenl at 13-3.
  • Trevor Johnson's service ace cut the lead to 14-8 before Vassar expanded the lead to 22-11 following winners from Kim and Jones.
  • The Brewers earned the set victory after an ace from Desai and a kill from junior Tobias Clark.
FOURTH SET
  • Akoto's winner evened the set at five apiece before a kill from Gonzalez gave Arcadia a 7-5 lead.
  • The Knights lead expanded to 11-8 on a solo block from Miller until Vassar battled back to even the score at 15 on a block from Ramsey and Akoto.
  • The Brewers pushed ahead at 20-18 on a block from Desai and Ramsey before a kill from Turner cut the lead to one.
  • Vassar took the final five points as a solo block from Guaragno clinched the four set victory for the Brewers.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Desai and Kim each tallied 10 kills apiece while Desai added two aces and four blocks and Kim finished with three blocks.
  • Lounsbery added seven kills, two aces and four digs along with Ramsey adding six kills and three blocks.
  • Erickson handed out a team-high 22 assists and two aces while Schoenl added 18 assists.
  • Sophomore Casey McMenamin lifted a match-high nine digs.
FOR THE KNIGHTS
  • Gonzalez finished with a match-high 11 kills and lifted three digs.
  • Clendening tallied nine kills along with Evan Rothmann recording six kills and a block.
  • Miller added three kills and four blocks and Kodidek registered 32 assists, two kills, three aces, four blocks and seven digs.
  • Cameron Birch finished with a team-high eight digs.

  • Vassar will conclude its road trip against #3 Stevens next Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in Hoboken.
