ROCHESTER, NY - The #9 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team suffered two tough losses on Saturday as the Brewers were outlasted by #7 St. John Fisher 25-20, 20-25, 13-25, 25-23, 11-15 followed by a 18-25, 22-25, 22-25 loss to #3 Southern Virginia in the nightcap. Vassar falls to 16-5 overall and 5-1 in UVC action.

FIRST SET
- Both teams traded points throughout the beginning of the first set as senior Jacob Kim's kill evened the set at nine all.
- The Cardinals took a 17-16 lead on a kill from Ian Rauh before Vassar used back-to-back Kim winners to take a 20-19 lead.
- After Griffin Stella's kill evened the set at 20 all, the Brewers scored the final five points of the set to take the opening set.
- A kill from senior Andrew Guaragno along with an ace from Kim and a block from Guaragno and first year Armaan Desai closed the set for the Brewers first set victory.
SECOND SET
- The Brewers used two kills from Guaragno and one each from Desai and Kim to go ahead 6-3 early.
- Two aces from Gavin Newman put the Cardinals ahead 8-7 before Vassar evened the set at 13 on a winner from junior Payne Lounsbery.
- Kills from Sonepith Keoviengsam and Jake Baker regained St. John Fisher's lead at 18-16 until an ace and kill from Guaragno helped Vassar regain a one-point advantage.
- The Cardinals scored seven of the final eight points in the second set to even the match at one set all.
THIRD SET
- The Cardinals held a 10-5 lead following a service ace from Casey Jackson and a kill from Baker.
- A solo block from Rauh extended the lead to 13-6 before the advantage expanded to 18-7 on three service aces from Newman.
- A block from junior Tobias Clark and Desai cut the lead to nine until St. John Fisher won the set on a Baker winner.
FOURTH SET
- Following a kill from Jackson and a block from Jackson and Stella to go ahead 5-3, the Brewers rattled off six straight points to go ahead 9-5.
- Two aces from Guaragno along with a kill from senior Vaughn Ramsey and Lounsbery spurred the run.
- The lead grew to 12-6 after a block from Ramsey and Lounsbery before the Cardinals got within three on a Rauh kill.
- The Brewers used a block from junior Gavin Akoto and Ramsey to push the lead to 23-16 before St. John Fisher got within 24-22 on a Rauh kill.
- Kim buried a winner to clinch the fourth set and push the match to a deciding fifth set.
FIFTH SET
- Vassar went ahead 5-3 after a kill each from Kim and Guaragno along with an ace from Lounsbery.
- St. John Fisher answered with six of the next seven points, led by three aces from Newman, to gain a 10-6 lead.
- Vassar forced a timeout after kills from Kim and senior Colin Jones at 12-10 before the Cardinals took the final set on a Baker winner.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Kim notched a team-high 14 kills along with 18 assists and four digs while Guaragno tallied nine kills, three aces, two blocks and seven digs,
- Ramsey added seven kills and three blocks along with Lounsbery recording six kills, three blocks and three digs.
- Desai finished with four kills and five blocks while senior AJ Erickson handed out a team-high 19 assists and added five digs.
- First year Tucker Shearn lifted six digs for the Brewers.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Baker and Rauh each buried a match-high 15 kills while Rauh recorded three blocks.
- Stella finished with seven kills and two blocks along with Jackson and Gabe La Robardiere adding six winners.
- Newman recorded an impressive all-around game with five kills, 45 assists, nine aces and eight digs.
- Trace La Robardiere lifted a match-high 12 digs while Tyler Cohen added 11 digs.
SVU 3 VASSAR 0
FIRST SET
- Vassar drew even at five in the first set on a kill from sophomore Cannon Tucker before Southern Virginia took a 9-6 lead.
- A block from Tucker and Akoto put the Brewers within one at 10-9 until the Knights used kills from Kyler Evans and Christian Sheaffer to push its lead to 14-9.
- The Brewers got within 19-15 on a Ramsey kill before a block from Kristo Bianchin and Samuel Candland took the first set for the Knights.
SECOND SET
- Three kills from Jeremy Brown along with aces from Bianchin and C. Sheaffer put the Knights ahead 7-4.
- Ramsey's kill put Vassar within one at 7-6 until Southern Virginia pushed ahead 12-7 on kills from Evans and C. Sheaffer.
- Two winners from Tucker and a block from Tucker and Clark cut the lead down to 16-12 before Southern Virginia scored five straight to expand the lead to 21-12.
- Vassar battled back to cut the lead down to 23-20 after two kills from Ramsey and one from Desai but the Knights used kills from Jayton Hall and Bianchin to win the second set.
THIRD SET
- The Brewers took a 6-5 lead on a Ramsey winner until Southern Virginia took its own lead on a Brown kill at 10-9.
- Lounsbery's kill evened the set at 15 all followed by a Clark winner tying the set at 18 apiece.
- The Knights used two kills from C. Sheaffer and Brown to go on a six-point run to extend the lead to 24-18.
- Two kills from Ramsey and a block from Ramsey and Desai cut the lead to 24-22 before SVU took the third set on a VC error.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Ramsey finished with 10 kills (.769) while Tucker tallied seven winners and three blocks.
- Desai registered three kills and three blocks along with Lounsbery recording three winners and four digs.
- Kim handed out 13 assists while Erickson tallied 10 assists and six digs.
- Shearn finished with a team-high nine digs.
FOR THE KNIGHTS
- Brown finished with a match-high 14 kills and four digs while C. Sheaffer recorded 10 kills.
- Bianchin tallied six winners and three blocks along with Candland adding four kills, seven digs and two blocks.
- Tyler Sheaffer handed out a match-high 34 assists and chipped in two blocks.
- Justin Madsen lifted a team-best seven digs.
UP NEXT
- Vassar will be off until March 16 when they take on Monroe College and Sage in New Rochelle.
