Brewers Suffer Road Loss At #16/16 Swarthmore

Arcuri totals five points for Brewers

Swarthmore, PA – The Vassar College Men's Lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, dropping a 21-11 road decision at #16/16 Swarthmore. First Year Gavin Arcuri (Westhampton, NY) led the scoring attack with five points and joined Ian Zumpano (Towson, MD) with a hat trick in the contest.
 
Saturday's loss drops Vassar to the .500 mark at 1-1 overall on the season while Swarthmore improves to 3-0.
 
How It Happened
  • A tightly contested first quarter saw the Brewers hold a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes of play.
  • After two sides exchanged two-goal runs, Vassar got markers from Arcuri and Nate Johnson (Brentwood, TN) to grab a 4-2 lead with 1:15 left in the first quarter.
  • Swarthmore scored off the ensuing face-off following the Johnson tally to cut its deficit to 4-3.
  • Swarthmore opened the second frame with a 4-2 scoring run to grab a 7-6 lead on a Rex Mabbs tally at the 7:16 mark of the second period.
  • The Brewers got the game even on a Zumpano marker at the 6:13 mark, but a 2-1 spurt to close the half from the Garnet sent it into the intermission with a slim 9-8 advantage.
  • Swarthmore finished the opening 30 minutes with a 25-16 edge in shots and a 19-10 edge in groundballs.
  • Swarthmore controlled the face-off 'x' in the first half, holding a 13-6 edge in draws.
  • The Garnet opened an 13-9 advantage with a 4-1 scoring run to open the third quarter.
  • Vassar sliced its disadvantage to 13-10 on a Colin Patchet (Petaluma, CA) marker with 1:37 left in the frame.
  • Trailing by three goals heading into the final quarter, Vassar saw Swarthmore score the first eight goals of the fourth period to open a 21-10 lead on a Michael Hardiman marker with 1:41 left to play.
  • The Brewers stopped the scoring run with a TJ Carl (Rochester, NY) tally to close out the scoring in the game.

  • Arcuri finished the day with three goals and a pair of assists to go along with a caused turnover.
  • Zumpano potted three goals for the Brewers on seven shots on goal.
  • Troy Santise (Washington Township, NJ) scored twice for the Brewers.
  • Solomon Hess (Brewster, NY) led the Brewers with four groundballs and two caused turnovers.
  • Eli Sherman (San Francisco, CA) won eight face-offs and collected two groundballs.
  • Dan Bader (Forestdale, MA) assisted on a goal and picked up three groundballs.
  • Drew Quinn (Garden City, NY) got the nod in goal on Saturday and finished with a season-high 15 saves.

  • Von Mabbs led the scoring attack with three goals and three assists, adding four groundballs and caused turnover.
  • Carter Strauch finished with five points on the strength of three goals and two helpers.
  • Clay Almgren and Ryder Maston each finished with a hat trick and an assist.
  • Nolan Ohrman scored once and assisted on three tallies.
  • Jack McHenry went 12-for-18 in face-offs and led the team with nine groundballs.
  • Matthew Martinez went 15-for-18 in face-offs and collected eight groundballs.
  • Drew Tyson earned the win in goal after turning aside 13 shots.
