Men’s Tennis Topped At #21 MIT

Wong, Mantell score singles victories

Cambridge, MA – The Vassar College Men's Tennis team opened the spring season Saturday afternoon at #21 MIT, falling to the Engineers 7-2. Jay Wong (Hong Kong) and Ethan Mantell (Hermosa Beach, CA) earned singles victories for the Brewers on the day.
 
Saturday's loss drops Vassar back to the .500 mark overall on the season at 1-1.
 
Doubles
  • The Brewers played three competitive doubles matches to begin the day.
  • The top pair of Nolan Kubiak (Neenah, WI) and Mantell battled hard in an 8-5 defeat.
  • At the second position Fernando Bauermeister (Winter Park, FL) and Wong were edged by a score of 8-6.
  • The third pair Pedro Cattaruzzi (Chatham, NJ) and First Year Eugene Lee (Chico, CA) suffered a hard fought 8-5 loss.
 
Singles
  • Wong moved to 2-0 on the season in singles play after outlasting MIT's Ryan Xiao at the second flight. Wong opened the match with a 6-4 win and after Xiao evened the contest, went on to score at 10-4 victory to earn the win for the Brewers.
  • Mantell also moved to 2-0 on the young season with a triumph at fifth singles on Saturday. Mantell scored a 6-2, 7-5 victory for the Brewers over MIT's Joseph Li.
  • Bauermeister was in action for the first time in 2023-24 and suffered a tight 5-7, 3-6 loss at the top flight for Vassar.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar will be off from competition until March 4 when it opens its West Coast swing at Cal Lutheran.
