#6 Men's Volleyball Outlasts #RV MIT; Sweeps Endicott

Brewers earn first conference victory in a five-set thriller against the Engineers

CAMBRIDGE, MA - The #6 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team bounced back with two victories on Saturday as the Brewers outlasted conference foe #RV MIT 20-25, 25-15, 28-26, 21-25, 15-7 before sweeping Endicott 25-17, 25-21, 25-15 in the nightcap. Vassar's record improves to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in UVC action following the two victories.

VASSAR 3 MIT 2

FIRST SET
  • The Engineers took an early 4-1 lead as Phillip Johnson tallied two blocks and a kill along with an ace from Grant Oh.
  • Vassar battled back to even the score at five on a kill from junior Tobias Clark before MIT scored four straight to go ahead 9-5.
  • The Brewers got within two on a kill from sophomore Tristan Christofferson and a block from senior Vaughn Ramsey and Christofferson at 10-8.
  • MIT's lead grew to 17-10 following two kills each from G. Oh and Nick Gustafson before a kill and an ace from senior Jacob Kim forced an Engineers timeout at 18-13.
  • Kills from Gustafson and George Chang increased the lead to 23-17 before Vassar got within four on a block from Christofferson and Clark at 24-20.
  • The Engineers took the opening set on a kill from Jay Goettman.
SECOND SET
  • After Riley Oh's ace opened the set with a point for MIT, Vassar tallied two kills from Kim, one winner each from Clark and junior Gavin Akoto and an ace from junior Billy Fan to take a 5-1 lead to force an Engineers timeout.
  • MIT trimmed the lead down to 9-6 on a kill from Michael Rini before a kill from Ramsey and an ace from senior Colin Jones pushed the lead to five.
  • Vassar used a Ramsey kill and a MIT error to extend the lead to 19-12 and back-to-back kills from Fan forced a MIT timeout at 21-13.
  • Following Gustafson's winner to cut the lead to 22-15, the Brewers scored the final three points, led by a Fan kill to even the match at one set apiece.
THIRD SET
  • Vassar opened the set with a 4-1 lead after an ace from senior AJ Erickson along with a block from Fan and Akoto.
  • MIT drew even at six on a winner from Gustafson before the Brewers regained the lead at 11-8 on a block from Akoto and Kim.
  • The Brewers lead grew to 20-15 after an other ace from Erickson along with winners from Fan and Ramsey.
  • The Engineers drew even at 23 following five straight points, including a block from Gustafson and Rini.
  • The set went back and forth in the final points before a block from Jones and Ramsey and a MIT error earned VC a 28-26 set victory.
FOURTH SET
  • The Brewers held an 8-5 advantage following a kill from first year Armaan Desai along with two errors from MIT.
  • A solo block from Gustafson knotted the set at 13 as the Engineers took a 18-16 lead after a block from R. Oh and Rini.
  • Vassar surged back to tie it at 19 all following a kill from Ramsey and a block from Fan and Akoto.
  • The Engineers tallied three straight points on a kill from G. Oh and blocks from Johnson and Gustafson to go ahead 23-20.
  • A winner from Gustafson and a solo block from Goettman forced a fifth and deciding set.
FIFTH SET
  • Vassar took an early 5-1 lead to open the fifth set as Fan tallied two kills and a block along with a winner from Kim.
  • Goettman's winner put the Engineers within 9-4 before a kill each from junior Payne Lounsbery and Ramsey to take a 11-5 advantage.
  • VC earned the match victory following kills from Fan and Ramsey along with a solo block from Akoto.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Fan led the way with 14 kills and three blocks while Ramsey recorded 11 kills and three blocks.
  • Kim finished an all-around match with 11 kills, 20 assists, three blocks and five digs.
  • Akoto registered seven kills, two aces and five blocks along with Clark finishing with seven kills, three blocks and eight digs.
  • Erickson added a team-best 22 assists, two aces and four digs while first year Tucker Shearn lifted a team-high 11 digs.
FOR THE ENGINEERS
  • Gustafson buried a match-high 24 winners in addition to four blocks and seven digs.
  • Goettman tallied 10 kills and two blocks while G. Oh recorded nine kills, two aces and nine digs.
  • Rini finished with seven kills and seven blocks while Johnson tallied six kills, two aces and five blocks.
  • R. Oh handed out a match-high 48 assists and also lifted a match-high 14 digs.

VASSAR 3 ENDICOTT 0

FIRST SET
  • A kill apiece from Lounsbery and Fan along with a block from Christofferson and Lounsbery put the Brewers ahead 4-1 early.
  • Endicott drew even at six on a winner from Dean Warner before Vassar scored four straight points, led by a kill from Desai and an ace from Lounsbery.
  • Following a kill from Aidan Iacovelli cut the lead to 15-10, the Brewers extended the lead to eight on two kills from Lounbsery and one from Desai.
  • Vassar's lead grew to 23-13 on a Ramsey winner before the Gulls battled back to cut the lead to six on an ace from Laborde.
  • Sophomore James Zuckerman's ace clinched the opening set victory for Vassar.
SECOND SET
  • The Gulls got out to a 5-1 lead as Warner buried a kill while Iacovelli landed an ace and Mason Mallory and Logan Pohl combined for a block.
  • Mallory's kill extended the advantage to 9-5 before sophomore Eli Lee's winner got the Brewers within one at 10-9.
  • A block from Aaron Bennett and Corey Klass Jr. pushed Endicott ahead 14-11 until Vassar knotted the set at 17 after two kills from Jones.
  • Vassar rattled off four straight points as Lee and Lounsbery notched kills to go ahead 21-17.
  • Back-to-back blocks got the Gulls within three at 24-21 before Desai's kill gave Vassar the second set victory.
THIRD SET
  • After the set opened even at three, first year Parker Schoenl landed two aces along with kills from Lounsbery and Desai to go ahead 7-3.
  • Four straight kills from Jones extended the Brewers lead to 14-7, forcing an Endicott timeout.
  • Back-to-back winners from Bennett and Laborde cut the lead to six before kills from Desai and first year Enzo Bertini and an ace from Lounsbery extended the Vassar lead to 21-12.
  • Lee and Ramsey buried consecutive winners to increase the lead to 23-12 before the Brewers completed the sweep on an Endicott service error.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Jones tallied nine kills while Lounsbery also notched nine winners along with two aces, two blocks and two digs.
  • Desai finished with eight kills and two blocks while Lee buried seven winners.
  • Ramsey had six kills, Fan tallied four kills and an ace and Erickson handed out a team-high 17 assists.
  • Schoenl finished with 14 assists and two aces along with Shearn lifting a match-high 13 digs.
FOR THE GULLS
  • Iacovelli tallied nine kills and two aces to lead Endicott while Warner added five kills and two digs.
  • Mallory finished with four killls and three blocks along with Bennett recording three blocks.
  • Gavin Emenaker registered a team-high 15 assists and Dan Battista lifted a team-best eight digs.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar hosts four straight matches this week as they will begin the stretch with a clash with conference foe NYU on Wednesday evening.
