#6 Men's Volleyball Coasts to Sweep Over #19-T Benedictine

Christofferson buries 11 kills, records four blocks while hitting .588 to lead Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The #6 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team played host to #19-T Benedictine on Wednesday evening at Kenyon Hall as the Brewers cruised to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 sweep of the Eagles for its third straight victory. The Brewers improve to 9-2 overall with the victory while Benedictine falls to 4-4 on the season.

FIRST SET
  • Vassar raced out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set as six different Brewers registered a kill along with an ace from senior Jacob Kim.
  • A triple block from sophomore Tristan Christofferson, junior Billy Fan and senior Vaughn Ramsey pushed the lead to 13-5 before the Eagles battled back with back-to-back blocks from Chase Olson and Brayden Rice to cut the lead to 18-12.
  • Three straight Vassar points extended the advantage to 21-12 following a kill each from Ramsey and junior Gavin Akoto.
  • The Brewers took the opening set following a kill from Fan and an attack error from the Eagles.
SECOND SET
  • The Brewers took five of the first six points on a kill each from Christofferson, Kim and junior Payne Lounsbery along with a Christofferson ace.
  • Benedictine battled back to knot the set at eight all after two kills from Brannen Almarales.
  • The Vassar advantage was brought back to four after kills from Kim and Lounsbery to make it 16-12 before an Almarales ace trimmed it down to two.
  • VC recorded six straight points, led by an ace from Lounsbery and a winner each from Ramsey and Akoto to push the lead to 22-14.
  • The Eagles got within five on a winner from Rice before Christofferson's kill gave the Brewers a two-set advantage.
THIRD SET
  • Once again, Vassar opened with a lead at 5-3 on kills from Akoto, Kim and Christofferson before the Eagles battled back to take a 7-6 lead on a VC error.
  • The Brewers scored four straight points as Ramsey and Christofferson each tallied a winner along with a block from Ramsey, Fan and Christofferson.
  • The lead grew to 15-10 before five consecutive Eagles points tied the set at 15 after a kill from Rice and a block from Almarales and Shawn Sullivan.
  • Benedictine took a 18-17 lead before Vassar battled back to take a 22-20 lead on a solo block from Ramsey.
  • After Chandler Olson's service ace knotted the set at 22 all, Vassar used two kills from Christofferson and one from Fan to clinch the sweep.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Christofferson tallied a match-high 11 kills while hitting .588 and added four blocks along with Akoto tallying eight kills (.583), five digs and a block.
  • Fan recorded eight winners, two blocks and three digs while Kim finished with seven kills, 17 assists and seven digs.
  • Ramsey added five kills and four blocks along with Lounsbery tallying four kills and nine digs.
  • Senior AJ Erickson registered a team-best 19 assists and added four digs while first year Tucker Shearn lifted a match-high 13 digs.
FOR THE EAGLES
  • Cooper Armstrong recorded seven kills and three digs while Almarales tallyied seven kills, two aces and a team-high 12 digs.
  • Rice finished with five kills, three digs and two blocks and Tucker Lambert added three kills.
  • Chan. Olson finished with a team-high 14 assists and added six digs.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar hits the road to take on #RV Lasell on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.
  • Benedictine will travel to #RV New Paltz for a Friday night clash.
