#6 Men's Volleyball Fends Off #RV Kean

Brewers defeat the Cougars in four sets behind double-digit kills from Akoto and Fan

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Juniors Billy Fan and Gavin Akoto each tallied double-digit kills as the #6 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team defeated #RV Kean 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-18 on Saturday afternoon at Kenyon Hall. The Brewers improve to 8-2 on the season while Kean falls to 6-6 overall.

FIRST SET
  • The two squads traded points early as kills from Luke Frankenfield and Danny Pugliano pushed Kean ahead 7-6.
  • Vassar answered with six of the next seven points, led by two kills from Fan, an ace from Akoto and a solo block from senior AJ Erickson.
  • The Brewers lead grew to 17-10 on a winner from junior Payne Lounsbery before Kean battled back within four on a kill from Rajheem Meulens.
  • Chris Mitchell's kill put the Cougars within 23-19 before a kill from sophomore Tristan Christofferson and a block from Akoto gave Vassar the opening set.
SECOND SET
  • The Brewers took an early 6-4 lead on a kill from Erickson followed by Akoto's kill extending the lead to 11-9.
  • Kean answered and took the lead at 12-11 on a block from Pugliano and Meulens.
  • Following a kill from Frankenfield that tied it at 15 all, Vassar used a kill from Fan and two Kean errors to push its lead to three.
  • The Cougars evened the set at 22 after two kills from Jack Freese and a winner from Pugliano before Vassar took the final three points on a kill and ace from Akoto and a block from Christofferson and Erickson.
THIRD SET
  • The Cougars took the early 6-3 advantage after two aces from Ryan DiCandilo as the lead grew to 11-7 on a Meulens winner.
  • Vassar drew within two at 13-11 on another Akoto kill before four straight points from Kean pushed their lead to 17-11.
  • Back-to-back aces from Erickson got Vassar within three before DiCandilo tallied two straight kills to increase the lead back to six.
  • Vassar trimmed the lead down to two on a block from Akoto and Lounsbery before a kill from Freese took the set for Kean.
FOURTH SET
  • Kean pushed ahead 7-5 in the opening stages of the fourth set as Meulens' kill put the Cougars ahead.
  • Vassar battled back to take a 9-8 lead on a block from senior Andrew Guaragno and Christofferson.
  • Kean regained the lead at 12-11 on a kill from Freese before four straight points from Vassar pushed them ahead 15-12.
  • Vassar soared ahead 21-14 after kills from Lounsbery and first year Armaan Desai.
  • Kean got it within 22-18 before a block from Akoto and sophomore James Zuckerman led the Brewers to a four-set victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Fan tallied 13 kills (.522) while adding 10 digs and a block while Akoto finished with 11 kills (.500), six blocks, two aces and three digs.
  • Senior Vaughn Ramsey recorded eight kills and two blocks while Lounsbery added seven kills and three blocks.
  • Erickson handed out 39 assists along with two aces and six digs along with first year Tucker Shearn lifting a match-high 14 digs.
FOR THE COUGARS
  • Freese finished with a match-high 18 kills (.211) while Frankenfield tallied 26 assists, six kills, two blocks and eight digs.
  • DiCandilo added five kills and three aces along with Meulens recorded five kills, two blocks and two digs.
  • David Flores handed out 10 assists and three digs and Tyler Quinn lifted nine digs.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar will return home to take on Benedictine on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
  • Kean will take on Eastern on Tuesday night at home.
