Women’s Basketball Tripped Up In Liberty League Opener At Ithaca

Gelb nets season-high 24 points

Ithaca, NY – Senior Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) poured in a season-high 24 points, but it was not enough as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team dropped its second straight decision with a 75-69 loss at Ithaca in both team's Liberty League opener Friday evening.
 
Vassar slips to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play following Friday's result, while the Bombers improve to 2-3 overall and move to 1-0 in Liberty League play.
 
First Half
  • The two teams went back-and-forth over the first seven minutes of the game, until the Brewers closed the opening stanza on a 9-0 run to take a 19-10 advantage.
  • Gelb scored seven points over the closing stretch, including a three-pointer, with Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) hitting a jumper in the closing seconds of the quarter to give the Brewers the nine-point advantage.
  • Vassar went 8-for-21 from the floor over the opening 10 minutes and knocked down a pair of three-pointers.
  • Vassar maintained the lead until the 6:29 mark of the second frame when an Elizabth Majka bucket for the Bombers knotted the score at 21-21.
  • Gelb knocked down another three-pointer at the 4:06 mark of the frame to give Vassar back a 27-24 lead.
  • A 7-0 spurt from the Bombers, capped by a Grace McNamara bucket, gave Ithaca a 31-27 lead with 2:29 left before halftime.
  • Vassar scored the final five points of the quarter, getting a three-pointer from Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) in the final minute to carry a slim 32-31 lead into the intermission.
  • Vassar shot an even 50-percent from the floor in the second quarter and closed the first half shooting 41.9-percent while knocking down a trio of three-pointers.
  • Ithaca shot 50-percent in the first half, including 64.3-percent in the second quarter.
 
Second Half
  • After Ithaca scored the first bucket of the third period, Vassar reeled off the next seven points, including a triple from McDermed to open a 39-33 advantage.
  • The Brewers matched their largest lead of the game with 2:54 left in the third quarter when a Regan conversion pushed the lead to 46-37.
  • Ithaca countered with the final 11 points of the quarter, including three triples in the final 2:41, to rally for a 48-46 lead through 30 minutes of play.
  • Ithaca raced out to a 53-47 lead following a three-point play from Majka with 7:50 left in regulation time.
  • Gelb would bring the Brewers back even with six straight points, but Vassar would not lead again in the contest.
  • After Vassar knotted the score, Ithaca used a 14-4 run, capped by a Jillian Payne three-pointer, to grab a game-high 67-57 lead with 3:18 left to play.
  • The Bombers matched their largest lead of the game on a Zoraida Icabalceta three-pointer, making the score 70-60 with 1:55 left.
  • A Caroline Siekman (Islesboro, ME) three-point play in the final minute cut the disadvantage to 71-67, but Ithaca scored four of the final six points of the game to close out the victory.
  • Ithaca shot 48.5-percent after halftime and a blistering 7-for-12 from three-point range.
  • Vassar shot 46.2-percent after the break and knocked down four triples.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb netted a season-high 24 points on 8-for-19 shooting that included three triples. Gelb hauled in seven rebounds and handed out three assists for the Brewers.
  • McDermed scored 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting, adding two boards, two assists and a pair of blocks.
  • Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) scored a season-high 11 points to go along with two rebounds and a team-high two steals.
  • Bella Tawney (Simsbury, CT) hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds and chipped in four points.
  • Regan supplied five points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists off the bench.
 
For The Bombers
  • Majka led three Bombers in double-figures with a team-high 22 points, going 9-for-11 from the floor. Majla secured eight caroms and swiped to steals.
  • Madison Gill chipped in 10 points, two assists and two steals.
  • Payne came off the bench to score 15 points.
  • Anya Watkins closed out the win with nine points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 43.9-percent for the game and went 7-for-21 from three-point range.
  • Ithaca converted at 49.2-percent and went an efficient 8-for-17 from three-point range.
  • Ithaca held a 21-12 advantage in points off of turnovers.
  • Fast break points went to Ithaca, 14-8.
  • Ithaca held a 38-32 advantage in paint points.
