Women's Volleyball Tripped Up in Conference Finale

Brewers fall in three sets to RIT

Rochester, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team hit the road for the final conference match on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers fell 18-25, 21-25, 20-25 to RIT. Vassar's record falls to 6-14 overall and closes the conference slate at 3-5 while the Tigers improve to 17-11 on the season and 4-4 in Liberty League play.

First Set
  • RIT jumped ahead 6-3 to open the set on a block from Mia Gerber and Cat Vento before Vassar battled back to take a 7-6 lead on an ace from senior Hailey Hayes.
  • A kill from sophomore Holland Kaplan put Vassar ahead 11-9 until five straight points from the Tigers, led by an ace from Hailey Blixt and kills from Macie Joliffe and Samantha Cox, put RIT up 14-11.
  • RIT's lead grew to 20-13 on another block from Gerber and Vento, leading to a Vassar timeout.
  • Vassar trimmed the lead to 23-18 on a winner from senior Julia Hale and back-to-back kills from Kaplan before RIT earning the opening set 25-18 victory.
Second Set
  • The Tigers raced out to a 5-1 lead to begin the second set as Blixt landed an ace along with a block from Vento and Cox.
  • Following a kill from first year Erin Lovett, RIT recorded four straight points on two kills from Vento and a winner from Joliffe to go ahead 9-2.
  • An ace from Hayes along with a block from Hale and sophomore Maura McAusland reduced the lead to 10-6.
  • Senior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield's kill got the Brewers within 14-10 before the Tigers tallied three straight points to extend the lead to 16-10 on a block from Vento and Joliffe.
  • The Brewers cut the lead down to 16-14 following two aces from Kaplan and a kill each from Lovett and McAusland.
  • Gerber's winner pushed RIT ahead 20-16 until VC used two kills from Kaplan and a block from junior Rebecca Gutierrez and Kaplan to reduce the lead to 23-21.
  • The Tigers used an ace from Blixt and a winner from Cox to take the second set 25-21.
Third Set
  • After RIT opened the set with a 4-2 lead on an ace from Joliffe, Vassar scored four straight, led by two kills from McAusland and blocks from Hale, McAusland and Anthony-Brumfield to go ahead 6-4.
  • Vassar's lead grew to 11-6 following two Anthony-Brumfield kills and a winner each from Kaplan, Hale and McAusland.
  • An ace from Madison Macko trimmed the lead down to 11-9 before the Brewers expanded the lead to 15-9 on two Gutierrez kills and one from sophomore Francesca Medrano.
  • RIT cut the lead to 16-15 after six straight points, led by two kills from Joliffe and one winner from Vento.
  • The Tigers regained the lead at 20-19 on an ace from Sydney Neff before Kaplan evened the set at 20 on a kill.
  • RIT scored the final five points of the set and earned the win on a block from Cox and Lilo Gerald-Emesih.
For The Brewers
  • McAusland tallied a team-high 11 kills, 11 digs and two blocks while Kaplan finished with 10 kills, four aces, seven digs and two blocks.
  • Hale added five winners and four blocks along with Gutierrez, Lovett and Anthony-Brumfield registering three kills each.
  • Hayes handed out 13 assists along with two aces and four digs while junior Ellie Kogan lifted a match-high 15 digs.
For The Tigers
  • Vento finished with nine kills and five blocks along with Joliffe tallying eight kills.
  • Cox registered six kills and three blocks while Gerber finished with six kills and six digs.
  • Neff recorded a match-high 27 assists and 11 digs while Blixt added 12 digs and three aces.

  • Vassar will travel to non-conference foe New Paltz on Wednesday evening.
  • RIT hosts Oswego on Tuesday night.
