Women's Volleyball Falls in Four Sets in Final Road Match

Brewers close season with Senior Day tri-match against USMMA, Utica

Box Score New Paltz, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team made its final road trip of the season on Wednesday evening as the Brewers dropped a 19-25, 25-23, 21-25, 23-25 non-conference match with New Paltz. Vassar's record moves to 6-15 overall while the Hawks improve to 14-11 on the season.


First Set

  • New Paltz began the opening set with a 5-2 lead as Jamie Albrecht, Regan Moeykens and Mirella Valluzzi each buried a kill.
  • Vassar cut the lead to 7-6 on a winner from senior Julia Hale before a kill and a solo block from Lexi Stragalas increased the Hawks lead at 12-7.
  • The Brewers battled back to even the set at 14 all after an ace from senior Hailey Hayes and a winner from classmate Frannie Anthony-Brumfield.
  • NP rattled off six straight points, led by three kills from Letisha Perez, to regain the lead at 20-14.
  • Three straight kills from sophomore Holland Kaplan cut the New Paltz lead to 24-19 before the Hawks won the set on a kill from Kim Braun.

Second Set

  • Vassar soared ahead 10-2 to open the second set as junior Rebecca Gutierrez landed three service aces along with a kill each from first year Erin Lovett and sophomore Maura McAusland.
  • The Hawks cut the advantage to 14-10 after a kill and solo block from Perez before a winner from Gutierrez increased the lead to 16-11.
  • New Paltz got within a point at 18-17 on an ace from Elena Savage until Vassar recorded back-to-back kills from McAusland and Gutierrez.
  • The Brewers clinched the set on kills from Lovett and Kaplan along with a block from Gutierrez and Lovett.

Third Set

  • New Paltz scored six of the first seven points behind four kills from Maria Weigand and one from Perez.
  • Vassar cut the lead to 8-6 after back-to-back aces from Hayes and a solo block from Hale.
  • The Hawks extended the lead to 15-9 as Perez buried a winner and Savage landed a service ace.
  • Following a Lovett kill that trimmed the advantage to 17-13, the Hawks tallied three straight points to go ahead 20-13 on a Stragalas winner.
  • Vassar rallied with four straight points on set point to get within 24-21 after two aces from Kaplan before the Hawks took the set following a VC error.

Fourth Set

  • Vassar went ahead 4-3 to start the set following a Kaplan ace along with a block from Lovett and Gutierrez.
  • The Hawks took a 6-5 lead after a kill from Moeykens before McAusland's winner evened the set at six.
  • New Paltz rattled off nine straight points behind five aces from Weigand to push its lead to 15-6.
  • The lead grew to 18-8 on a kill from Stragalas and an ace from Courtney Meyer before the Brewers cut the lead to 19-14 following a kill each from Kaplan and Gutierrez and a block from Gutierrez and Lovett.
  • New Paltz pushed its lead to 22-14 on two aces from Albrecht before VC got within 23-17 on kills from Lovett and McAusland.
  • After Weigand's kill put New Paltz on match point, Vassar scored six consecutive points on two winners from Kaplan and a block from Hale and Kaplan to get within 24-23.
  • The Hawks clinched the match victory on a kill from Stragalas.

For The Brewers

  • Kaplan registered a team-high 11 kills, 13 digs and four aces while Lovett finished with eight winners and four blocks.
  • McAusland tallied five winners and eight digs along with Gutierrez recording four kills, three aces and three blocks.
  • Senior Molly Ardren handed out a team-high 14 assists and added seven digs while Hayes finished with 13 assists, three aces and five digs.

For The Hawks

  • Perez buried a match-high 14 kills and added two blocks along with Weigand recording 10 kills, 18 digs and five aces.
  • Albrecht finished with nine winners, two aces and nine digs while Moeykens tallying seven kills.
  • Stragalas and Valluzzi each added six kills along with Braun registering 20 assists and six digs.
  • Savage added 20 assists and three aces while Jordyn Lewis and Meyer each recorded three aces.

  • Vassar closes the season at home on Saturday with a Senior Day tri-match beginning at 11:00 a.m. against USMMA.
  • New Paltz will host a tri-match with Stevens and Drew on Saturday.
